Ruth, quite some time ago I noticed and saved your tutorial among my favourites and I am waiting for winter to bring snow and ice. Would it be ok to use any powder dyes for fabric? Currently I am using some dyes which are meant for machine dyeing but all these require a certain temeprature. Since I dye only smaller amounts I do that in the microwawe (lowest speed, 10 minutes) and it works fine. Why is Synthropol? Is this a fixing agent? Can I use something else instead?

The Procion dyes I use are not supposed to be used with cold either. I would just experiment with small amounts to see what happens. In the summer time I just buy bagged ice and use that. It works fine. Synthropol is a textile detergent. It's used as a prewash and an after wash. Here's a link that tells about it. www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.htmlI'm sure you can just use a regular soap just as well.

I had great fun doing some ice dyeing last year. It provided a wonderful base for further layering.

I've used both acid and Procion dyes for Ruth's ice dyeing. I prefer acid dyes, but if you're dyeing cotton or other plant materials you have to consider that in what you use. You don't have to wait for winter Nada, empty your ice cube trays or buy a bag if ice. It's a lot of fun with interesting results!

It may sound weird, but here in our country you cannot buy ice and my freezer is stuffed with food at the moment so I cannot make my own ice cubes. I'll wait for the winter, it will be more fun, I think. Thank you for all your suggestions.

We Americans love our ice and have a hard time living without it.
