This morning I was experimenting with a masking tape in nuno felting. The idea has been borrowed from the net but I think it gives very interesting results so I want to share it with you. For this I used merino wool and synthetic chifon and a masking tape (this is something we use when painting houses to protect the frames on the doors or windows). First I laid wool, put netting on it and wetted it well with soapy water (very important - the wool must be wet! ) Then I cut strips of tape about 1 cm in width and long enough to extend beyond the edges and placed them on wool in criss-cross manner to get a kind of a grid. On this I placed fabric and started felting. You need to felt the piece really well. Don't worry during the process of rubbing the adhesive on the tape will become nonsticking and will be easy to pull the strips out. What you need to do is to hold down the piece firmly on one end and pull the strip out with your other hand. After this you continue with fulling. I hope the picture shows well where I used the tape.

What time did you get up??
That's an interesting experiment - I haven't heard of using masking tape before. I need to file that idea in my brain. It's things like this that you never know when they're going to come in really handy. Thanks for sharing.

That turned out great Halay Great colours and effect. I haven't used masking tape, I'm so clumsy I'd get it stuck to everything! For effects like that, where I remove the resist, I usually use cut up 'bags for life' the stronger plastic shopping bags.

The "ruffled" effect is intriguing. Do you think the extreme felting was needed because of the synthetic fabric or masking tape, or both? Thanks for sharing!

Luvswool, I think it is both - although this synthetic fiber proved to be quite suitable for felting, you need to make sure that you don't disturb the "pattern" while pulling the tape out. Also, during further treatment it may happen that the parts which are sticking out would somehow get adhered to the base. This is just my feeling. Zed mentioned she uses stronger plastic but what I like about this tape is that it will not move while you are rubbing or rolling (the places where the two tapes cross are stuck together at least at the beginning) so you can keep the shape of the pattern stable.

Very interesting, Nada! I think it may be very helpful when you want to achive some particular pattern...

Great idea. Nice that it holds in place at first and helps to keep the pattern.
