Thanks, koffipot--I can definitely put some bird food in the bottom, but why is it too large for a house? I personally like a lot of space--maybe not so for the birds?

If the hole is to big bigger birds can get in and attack the nest or babies.

OK, so it's the hole size that's too large, not the size of the house? It may be a moot point, because I have not yet received any visitors.

Luvswool - I believe Lyn posted a list of recommended hole sizes for various birds earlier on this thread which you might find useful. They are really very fastidious and fussy creatures when it comes to choosing their building sites. Much more informed than we humans who build on flood plains and fault lines.

I'm not going to bother making bird houses, I have blackbirds nesting in my honeysuckle and wrens in the ivy.
