I want to stamp onto some fabric to make a label for the back of a felt piece I am going to exhibit. I want to know what ink or dye would be permanent on its own or if heat set that I can use for the stamp. I know I can heat set a sharpie for my signature. Any Ideas. Judy I thought you might know.

I have used acrylic paints very successfully for stamping on fabric. If you want it to be washable I recommend mixing with textile medium first and heat setting once dried.

They make ink stamp pads that are specifically for fabric I think but I don't know the brands. I would use either thickened dye or acrylic paints as Teri suggests. The thickened dye works great for stamping and screen printing. Is the fabric cotton or silk?
The other way I make labels is to run the fabric through the printer. You can attach a piece of fabric to a carrier piece of paper and then print right on the fabric. Or you can buy the fabric that is made to go through printers. I have also used a thicker piece of paper such as "hand made" paper that you buy from the art store and printed on that. Then I just fuse it to the back of the piece with fusible web.

I don't think it will ever get washed. its a picture. I am designing a hat to go in too. I should put a tag in it too. You never know they might sell. I should get some tags made up. I keep putting it off.

Ruth I was thinking of a peace of tightly woven cotton but silk would work. I was going to put some fusible web on the back. Then iron it onto the back. I could thicken some acid dye. or soak some cotton in the washing soda then stamp with fiber reactive dye. I wonder if it would go through the printer if it was fused. I knew I would get good answers here. Ruth do the printer inks run?
Terri I for got to say thanks. I think one of the kids has acrylics.

I would use the cotton, washing soda and fiber reactive dye. That would be the easiest.
You could run it through the printer with the fusible web paper as the backing. It just needs to be cut to the right size for the printer. Ink jet printer inks will run if they get wet especially right after they are printed. I usually iron mine to heat set them a bit and then let them sit. But of course I don't usually wash my stuff.

I have a tee shirt I always wear when painting with acrylics, and the paint never comes off in the wash, if that helps?
I keep meaning to get woven tags done too.
Years ago, I bought that transfer paper to go through the printer, you cut it out and iron on to fabric, it worked well. I did mess around and try writing on with ballpoint pen and ironed that on fabric, that worked too.
I wish we could get freezer paper here, I'd put cotton through the printer.

Zed - have you had a look on ebay? I'm pretty sure that is where I bought my freezer paper...
