That's what usually happens when I've mixed coarse fibers with finer fibers.

If you shave the pot is will reveal more of the yellow colour. You will loose all the hairiness that I think is nice on this pot.

That's a good idea Ann, I might try shaving a pattern into it....

That is fun too. but I meant just lightly save the fuzz off. When I put a silk cap on a hat it often disappears until I give the hat a light shave.

I'm very new to felting and so far have only made flat pieces but I would love to try one of these pods/bowls. Is it possible to make a large pod that can hold approx 10lbs and not squish out of shape once it's filled? How would I stiffen it or stop it from losing it's shape? Thanks in advance, I'm just so excited to try it.

Yeah, there might be a lot of maths involved though. You'd need to know the size of the bowl that you want to end up with, then depending on the shrinkage rate of the type/quantity of wool you use, you'd need to increase your template or choose a 3D resist large enough to account for that shrinkage.
If you use a wool which felts densely and use enough and felt/full it enough, it will support itself no matter what the size.
What do you intend to use it for/how do you want it to look, we might be able to help more.

Hi Dreamtrippa, welcome. You may want to try a sample with the wool you're going to use and check the shrinkage. Then you'll have an idea how much larger to make the vessel template. You can check Zed's blog feltbyzed.blogspot.com/p/free-tutorials.html. Or Lyns www.rosiepink.typepad.co.uk both have tutorials and books on vessels you may find helpful. You may also want to search our blog at feltingandfiberstudio.com for other information. I look forward to seeing your finished pod. Good luck! Please don't hesitate to ask more questions along the way!

Welcome Dreamtrippa! Glad you joined us and your project sounds fun. Do let us know a few more details of what you'd like to end up with and we can give you some more possibilities of how to make it. You will need to use a coarse wool to get the sturdiest bowl as Zed has suggested.

Brings back memories of my felted vessel class, where really the results were not as sturdy as we thought they would be. We were advised to use the glue mix to dip the vessels in after drying, but I don't think the results were great. The class itself was terrific. We were using Icelandic wool, so perhaps that is not coarse enough or we did not felt/full hard enough. At some point, I will try again at home.

Welcome Dreamtrippa, I always like making pods or vessels because they do not have to fit anyone when I am done. Too big or too small and it is still good.

Wow thanks so much for all the responses. I'm using Corriedale wool and it's 28 micron. I want to get a few projects under my belt before I upgrade to Merino. I want to make a bowl similar to this: rosiepink.typepad.co.uk/rosiepink/tutorial-how-to-make-a-wet-felted-pod.htmlbut with the opening further down, say 2/3s up from the bottom. It's rather unglamorous but I would like it to hold shape with about 10lbs of potatoes in it. I was looking at the unsightly plastic bag they come in and just thought "felt" although I see lots of things now and think "felt" lol Thanks again for all your responses, I really appreciate it

If you just want to put it on the floor with 10 pounds of potatoes I should be easy. however if you want to hang it, it will need to be very strong. Maybe try something smaller for a first one. Are you Patricia form Facebook, you posted in wet felt makers?

Hi Shepherdess, no I'm not a Patricia. I could only find needle felting on facebook. Do you have a link for wet felting pages?

Hi Dreamtripper, I have also become absolutely hooked on making pods, I love 3d and how you can embellish and play with them. This pink one is at stage one, I've used silks, merino and coarse fleece I dyed myself, I love how shapes are happening for me to embellish. This one isn't huge it's 10" by 7", when I dry my pods I put in a bag os sand to hold the shape at the bottom, so even thro it feels like it will flop, but the time it's dry it's sturdy. The blue one is a little larger and it's finished.
