I'm planning on getting some yarn to dye, and thought I'd get some for my Mum for crocheting too, but I have no idea what size I need to look for, does anyone know what I need to get? Also, I see rugs that people have crocheted from old teeshirts, I'm guessing this requires a huge hook? I'm looking for things she can do when she gives up smoking in the New year

When i stopped smoking I had so much energy I couldn't even sleep! That's when I started walking 10km a day... I had to get all that adrenaline out of my system.. well, not adrenaline... I was breathing oxygen again! that was it! Errrr... does your mom crochet now?? I mean, you can crochet with anything but some people have predilections. My grandma crochets with sewing thread... yeah... that thin. I like more cotton yarn and I have some sock yarn which is a nice thickness too. Some people like very chunky yarn, some thinner... it's kinda personal. Crocheting fabric does not necessarily require a large hook... more like it depends on the thickness of the "fabric yarn", just like with any yarn. The size of the hook depends on the yarn. It is naturally easier with a hook 5 and up (aaaah different countries have different sizes! I think in the US it is by letter??). Spinning could keep your mom busy too...

I agree, what is it she wants to make would be the question. a lady at our market makes rugs from sheets. she cuts them in strips. I saw on the internet someone crocheting rugs from thick roving. or lace now you go the other way. What does she do now, hobby wise.

Oh my Nan used to crochet the most gorgeous lace and make doilies and tableclothes, so delicate i wished i learned that way back when lol I'd probably start off with maybe an 8ply yarn and a number 5 hook, nice weight and size to get used to, and i dont crochet except for i have made a few of those colorful blankets where you just crochet round and round in circles or squares , thats about my limit lol Its fun though and keeps the hands occupied

I don't know what she's working on at the moment. I was going to get her some vintage knitting patterns and told her I'd been looking, she said she was crocheting at the moment, but I don't know what. I know she's crocheted baby clothes. Maybe I should just ask her Thanks for all the info
