We were asked on the blog the other day about using direct dyeing on a piece after it's already felted. I hadn't tried it, so I did that on Monday and got some interesting results If you have any advice or info, links to photos of your dyeing experiments, it'd be great if you could share them, here and on the blog feltingandfiberstudio.com/2011/12/13/direct-dyeing-felt-samples/

I dyed this piece after it was felted. It's a tablet cover with a small nuno felted silk embellishment. I just made a pot of dye and put it in the pot and simmered it in the pot for about 45 minutes. My hubby wanted green with "nothing fancy" on it. A bit boring.

That turned out really well. I wonder if it's better to use a pot of dye on felt rather than applying the dye and steaming? It'd be interesting to do a white sampler with lots of other fibres and see the dye uptake, I know there are 'rules' about which dyes to use for which fibre, but it'd be a good way to see which are more 'accepting'.

That sounds like a fun experiment. Most of the plant fibers will take up some acid dye but you just don't get strong colors. Wool will also take some fiber reactive dye but you get pale shades.
I think with the pot of dye you get better chance of a solid color if that's what you want.

Ruth you are posed to be able to use the MX dyes as acid dyes, using vinegar instead of the PHup

Thanks Ann - I have to get Procion MX dyes for my class so I'll have to do some experimenting with wool. I've not heard that they could be interchanged.

the acid dyes won't work as fiberreactive dyes. Just the other way round.

Ann, you have some really nice resist dyed pieces on the website, how did you do those?

I will have to go look at see what I posted. The samples are from a class I took with Chad Alice Hagen. The large circles are washers clamped on the felt. The circles that are fuzzy we pinched up the felt and then tied elastics around it tight. The small circles were from a piece of metal that had holes punched in it, one clamped on each side of the felt. Lastly the one with the long stripes was done with popsicle sticks. The blue close up one was sewn up in pleats going in many directions and the red and black stole was tied onto a pole with string or elastics and scrunched up and put in the dye pot. The pictures are here feltingandfiberstudio.com/fibers/dyeing/

Thanks Are they put into dye pots? Did they start one colour or dyed twice? I remember the pole one.

The blue and white one was only dyed once and the rest dyed twice. They were all done in a dye pot.
