I did something I have never done before. The class was called "Stitching on Air" and it is really impossible to describe. You cut a rectangle out of muslin and put it in a hoop, with the cut out rectangle in the center. You anchor your thread at the top of the rectangle into the muslin, then slowly machine stitch a line in the empty hole until you reach the bottom of the rectangle. You then anchor the bottom and the stitch stays put, stretched across the expanse. Then you turn and repeat, over and over and make it look like a fan. Anyway, at the end, you have a tree trunk and branches. I you would like to see what we did, you can go to my blog and open the Quilt Odyssey tab. I plan to do more of this. Maybe Ruth has done this before.

Cool Judy - I have actually done this before but I didn't make a tree. I like your trees.

You can go to my blog address and click on it here, then go to my Quilt Odyssey page to see the pictures of our teacher doing it, but I would really like to find out more about it. I wonder if there is a tutorial on YouTube. I had to crawl out from my hiding place while all the tornadoes pass around us. We live only 3 hours from Oklahoma City. More storms coming today from Texas. Too nervous to do any sewing.

Judy - glad to hear you're OK. That is scary to have tornadoes coming at you.

We are accustomed to tornado action, but I also live just one hour from Joplin, so things are getting serious. In fact we used to live in Joplin.

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought that was possible. I watched the Oklahoma tornado on msnbc, it was unbelievable

It always amazes me how few people are killed or hurt when so much is flattened.

I have lived in tornado alley for many years, but we have never experienced a direct hit like the one in Joplin and Oklahoma City. However we have always had a basement until we retired. Now we are worried and are discussing putting a storm shelter under our garage floor. The reason that there are no basements in our area is because we are sitting on rock here in southwest Missouri. Basements have to be blasted out. New schools are being built with storm shelters in the center. But most people do not want to put out the expense for safe rooms in their homes.
