This Martha Stewart clip is about 4 years old, but I'd not seen it before today. During the clip you will see the most amazing white felt yurt displayed in a New York museum - the artist is so talented. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZhk1YdI4qg

What an enormous undertaking. I first became interested in felt a couple of years ago, when an artist had an installation at the art museum where I was a tour guide. She had, among many other things, 5 foot tall flowers that hung on the wall. They were just the most amazing things I had ever seen.

You could pull it behind a 4 wheeler to roll it, if you don't have a handy horse.

Wow, thanks for posting that link. That yurt is beautiful. Now I'm off to do more searching on this site to see what Ruth is pulling behind a tractor.

I am building a yurt this summer. We have't started yet as I haven't gotten my 200# of wool back yet from the carding mill. It should be soon though. We are going to felt the cover of the yurt and pull the rolling mat of felting wool behind the tractor. I will be showing all the process on my blog and I'll let everyone know here when there are posts to see about the yurt. I hope to finish it by fall. Here's the post I wrote about getting the wool and going to the carding mill: feltingandfiberstudio.com/2013/03/20/wool-gathering/

Ruth, Can't wait for the Yurt! Can/will you explain what kind of wool and stuff like that on your blog. People always assume that everyone is on the same level of understanding. I'm wondering about "silk hankies", my great grandmother and grandmother use them but not the same kind as the felting ones......I hope. What the heck are nepps and tops? I've got to find a good basic felting book.

Billieanne, definitely get Ruth's book! And do have good look around our studio site, we have packed it with lots of info about different wools and their properties, as many different fibres as we have photos of etc and most sections have galleries of the wools and fibres being used in felting.

Just added Ruth's book to my order. Now I've got to see if there's other stuff to order. I have been roaming the site. I'll take a look at the silk link that Ruth posted above.

Having a look around is a good idea before you order, keep note of prices and weights, a lot of places seem cheap, but charge the same for 1 oz as others do for 100g. And beware of people giving things fancy names, I've seen people selling what they call 'Firestar' fibre, for quite a lot of money, it's actually just Superbright trilobal nylon and costs about £2.25/$3.50 per 100g.

Zed, Thanks for the information. I'm trying to be good and not jump in too fast. I did buy some basic things like a pool noodle for rolling, bubble wrap, felting needle and some wool and yarn.

I've been planning for a long time to do a blog post comparing online suppliers and their prices. Life keeps getting in the way You can always ask on here for recommendations if you want to find a cheap wool or fibre, it's easier than checking loads of sites
