I'm Judith and I've only been felting for about a year, However, I have to admit to having been totally addicted from the outset! I've also just started to spin so I'm hoping to incorporate some of my yarn into some felting projects. I hesitate to call it art yarn - 'rustic' may be a more appropriate term just yet
Thanks for starting up this new forum.

Hi Judith I'm glad you joined us. I think a lot of the appeal of handmade yarn is that it isn't 'perfect' you can buy that anywhere, and it's nice to be able to make exactly what you want isn't it?

Welcome Judith - I make 'rustic' hand spun yarn too. Are you using a drop spindle?

I learned on a cd spacer held onto the end of a dowel with elastic bands, like in this pic Then bought some wooden discs from ebay and made my own

Welcome to the forum. Hang onto that first yarn. When you get "good" it is hard to make it like that on purpose. I use one made from a wooden toy wheel, a dowl and a cup hook.

My spindle is 'homespun' Made by my very useful son-in-law. It's a bottom whorl. However, he's been researching spindles on the web and promises me a selection if I'd like them. Did I say yes? Well of course I did. He tells me that apparently a square whorl spins faster. Watch this space!

Plan for today...tidy felt away after craft fair and then...raid cd box. Going to see if dowl fits in. Have elastic bands. Need hook...all good. Fun to be had here I think. Thanks x

Hello Judith - we do rustic yarn as well! But it's great as an embellishment in felt.

I'd have to fit those little soft plastic things for toddlers over the corners of a square one to protect my clumsy knuckles

I think the square is a bottom whorl, so should be well away from your fingers.

I would like a Turkish spindle. if he makes the outside edge heavier than the inside it will spin better and faster. I use a bottom whirl spindle too. I like seeing my yarn on the shaft and not hiding it. I think mostly you use what ever your teacher used. I find it very relaxing.

It is very relaxing. I shall mention about the outside edge needing to be thicker. Thanks.
