Hello. I attended an online Lena Archbold's class on wetfelting mittens, gloves and leg warmers with resist. It was very easy, and the result is lightweight yet warmish felt that feels very comfy, soft and snug on your hand. I recommend the class, it is maybe not for total beginners, but definitely easy for medium level felters. The tricky part is just working with very small amounts of wool and other fibers, literally wisps: it's good to practice control. I made mittens for my youngest and my oldest immediately asked for hers. www.dropbox.com/s/d260pwbt6jidbrl/img_20220106_143920.jpg?dl=0I chose school colours, so not particularly challenging, but of course one could decorate them differently. You have a small amount of wool sandwiched inside two layers of other fiber (I used recycled sari silk, but you could have other fibers).

Glad the kids love their mittens Always good to work on different types of layout, I think that's the most important part of felt making.

Glad the kids love their mittens Always good to work on different types of layout, I think that's the most important part of felt making. Thanks, Ruth. Yes, you are right. It was cloud layout for the non-wool fibers, so it was pretty tricky to get it uniform with that very small, tiny amount of fiber. I found it tricky, anyway,...also, I was working with dark colours on a black resist, not the cleverest of ideas to check for holes: once the silk was wet I couldn't really see it much. I will never again use a black resist when I am planning for dark colours: learning experience! The merino layout was a 45 degrees layout for the first layer and 45 degrees in the opposite direction for the second layer, so not particularly hard. I got plenty of practice with controlling the amount of wool making lightweight scarves last summer, so now I am confident with simple layouts and tiny amounts of wool. Granted, it's not a project for total beginners, you need to already know how to control fiber and basic layout.

Thanks, Lyn. I am not stopping there, and not only because I feel that I need more practice in making them! I would like to try different sizes and more interesting embellishments and colour combinations.

Learning as many different ways as you can, then combine them into your own way.
