I was pleasantly surprized that I had won first place in the Art Quilt category at our quilt show this week. This is very satisfying, considering that this is not a art show, but a quilt show. I am clearly not the greatest quilter in the world. I won based on my creativity. I have not gotten the judges comments yet, but I will let you know what she says about it. That's really nice, Judy How did you get the effects? Did you overlay different fabrics?

It was accomplished by doing raw edge applique on the upper section and to the midsection. Then sheer fabrics had to be glued with a tiniest amount of fabric glue. This allowed the transparent (ice) fabric to show the background behind. The front (the rubble being pushed my the melting ice flow) is made of confetti cut fabrics that are sandwiched between water soluble stabilizer and then free motion quilted. Boulders are hand marbled papers with hand dyed cheesecloth glued over them. These are glued down with fabric glue. The piece is then wrapped over a piece of foam board. That is the part that photography cannot show you. It stands away from the quilted background quilt. I glue the foam board to the back quilt and then do a tacking with Fireline beading thread. It is very secure. I guess that is why the judge choose it. It is different from everything else in the show.

Just got home from the big quilt show. Really a lot of work. Here are the judges comments: Rich Color; Beautiful Texture; Contour Quilting Adds Grace; All Elements Are Secure; Construction Is Well Done; Knife Edge Is A Clean Finish. (I assume that means the edge that comes from the foam board.) Her only suggested improvement is that the corners could be pushed out more completely. (She is right) I am amazed that I was able to get this first place ribbon at a quilt show. And.....a hundred dollar check!!!!
