Hello, I have just joined this forum as a felter. This last summer/fall I took a felting tour in Hungary (life changing, wonderful!) and got a great exposure to the larger world of felting, and to the historic beginnings of this art/craft. The course was over my head, and painfully so at times!, but it only increased my commitment to put in the time and work it takes to improve my technique. I look forward to learning from this forum.

Welcome Soos! Glad you joined us. There is loads of information here if you want to look around and use the search function. We are also happy to answer any questions. We'd love to see your work as well. There are instructions on how to show your photos in the FAQ section. The Hungary tour sounds like a trip that you will always remember. We'd love to hear more about that too

Thank you to those who welcomed me! At present I'm working on little felted vests for my 1 1/2 yr old grand daughter. So far the shrinkage has been uneven inspite of my efforts to thwart this, but the biggest issue is pilling! I thought I had it well felted, but she scoots everywhere rubbing her arms back and forth. I used fine merino wool with some Nuno felted butterflies. Is it a bad choice for a baby garment?

Hi, merino is very fine and is lovely and soft but it does tend to pill in high traffic areas. Try something a little tougher like Corriedale. Gotland and Finnish wool can be nice as they make a tight felt that is smooth. Shrinkage is affected by the direction you laid out the wool and by the direction your rub or roll. We would love to see a picture.

Try making samples to determine shrinkage. Also Ann’s idea of combing fibers is a good one. Good luck!
