My sewing machine is second hand and I have had it a few short years. I was wondering how often you would consider renewing your machine needles? I use a purple ring one which is for heavyweight fabrics, and this has stayed put all this time.
I am sure bluntness would occur at some point, I seem to still get a nasty scratch from this same needle when I am threading sometimes !

When I looked that question up it says any where between 6-12 hours of sewing time. I think when we're stitching the way we do as opposed to sewing something like clothing, we can have a longer lifetime for needles. Especially in felt since it is fairly forgiving. But if you start skipping stitches or having other problems, I would suggest changing your needle. I change mine out every couple of months.

If I work on a project that requires a lot of stitching into felt, especially overlapping stitching where it gets a bit chunky, then I would change the needle after the one project.
For bits and pieces of sewing I do a quick mental tally of how many hours I think I've used the needle and I would change it after about 8 hours worth.
A blunt needle 'pulls' a bit on the felt as it exits.

Thanks very much ladies, interesting info. I have been ploughing on with the same needle for a bit too long by the looks of things then!
