I've been looking at some of the amazingly gorgeous work of Fiona Gill aka Marmalade Rose I notice that she seems to achieve an effect of dry fluffy wool even after wet-felting and in some of her pictures, the yarns and curly locks seem to only just be adhering to the surface rather than being embedded in the felt. So I'm wondering how this is achieved? This one of the robin, the background looks quite 'fibrey' and not flattened. www.marmaladerose.com/gallery-2?lightbox=dataItem-igig5tmrand this one where the yarns seem to stand proud and the curly locks look almost loose - perhaps they've been needle felted? www.marmaladerose.com/gallery-2?lightbox=dataItem-igidd1qcand the squirrel's tail doesn't look as though it's seen a single drop of soapy water! www.marmaladerose.com/gallery-3?lightbox=dataItem-iihcs1aqI'm going to try out some experiments over the next few days but I wondered if you have any ideas?

Perhaps she is adding needle felting after wet felting or not fulling completely. Let us know how your experiments go. Her wrk is certainly impressive.

Marian I have contacted Fiona in the past with a question, she is a very approachable lady, just use the contact button on her site.
I am sure if you explained about your commission and how you are not copying her work, but asking about techniques, she would help you.

Maybe she only lightly felts them? I can't tell from those photos, they're really small, but I think I know what you mean with the first two. I get a similar effect sometimes using embellishment fibres, if you have a look at the photo I posted for Ann about Shetland, actually I'll repost it here ... Dyed Shetland and Cellulose fibres (3) by zedster01, on Flickr The fibres seem to 'sit on top' of the felt. I've used quite thick yarns in felting and even after lots of felting/fulling and them being well attached, they can still look barely attached on top. I can't tell from the last photo, it does look very soft and unfelted, but I can't tell if that's just being so good painting with the wool or not.

Being a picture I'm guessing, as Zed said, it's felted just enough to hold it together and not very fulled. I got a similar effect with my seascape picture by doing that ... It's on here somewhere but I can't remember the post title. I think it was rather frowned on as 'bad felt' at the IFA weekend but I think if it's a picture and not going to get wear, why does it matter...go for the effect you want, not the felt 'quality'.

Sorry. Just realised I'm talking about roving, not yarn and locks but I would think the same applies?

Marion - Many of the designs you show are wall art and much of it will go under glass, in which case the details you mention need not be felted at all.
Her cushions are prints (from her originals) on a suede-like fabric.

Hear Hear! Wall art felt only has to be strong enough to not fall off the wall. Anyway, if you full your picture to the max to make "good" felt, you may lose the detail, colours and effect you were aiming for.

I agree that wall hangings do not need to be so fulled. I imagine they are not fulled to maximum but enough to get the effect she wants. the squirrel tail looks needled to me. There is someone on facebook that just puts her fiber pictures under glass and does not felt them at all.

Tracey I did contact Fiona and she wrote a lovely detailed email back to me. She rolls her felt for 2 hours using bubble wrap within a bamboo blind, then without the bubble wrap. She doesn't use a pre-felt backing, just ordinary wool roving and carefully traps other yarns with tiny wisps of wool......and she says she loses about half the wool nepps whenever she uses them too!!
So I am slowly getting the message......spend more time rolling ;-)
