I completed my latest bag today, sewing a snapfastener very securely with invisible thread under the flap and on the body. However......obviously it was not secure enough because my sewing was no match for the force of the magnet and it pulled the stitching straight away. I am pretty certain another piece of felt under the fastener will not be of much better use, so any ideas ladies? I am thinking a nice button and cut a buttonhole, but I like the flap as it is with no more adornments really. Hmmm....
I took a picture of the back view to show the flap was felted separately and sewn on. I would have preferred the next size up for the handle but it was not available in the colour I required.
Happy with it apart from the last stumbling block!

If the thread is a very strong synthetic it could just cut the felt through. Is it the case Tracey? Or the thread itself was broken?

Hi Galina, the thread is a polyamide ( that's what it says on the spool) it didn't break but just pulled apart. You probably have a point there though, I should try a tough cotton do you think?

Thanks Galina. I have re-sewed it using tough cotton, and it is better. So I hereby rename this thread 'NOT an over zealous snapfastener, user using wrong tools for the job' !!

Your bag looks great Tracey. I always use upholstery thread for this sort of thing and sew it on much more strongly than I think it needs. Those new magnets are really strong.

Great bag Tracey! Love the colors. I'm glad you got the thread resolved. I always use heavy duty thread for snaps.

Thanks Ruth and Marilyn, in hindsight yes it was upholstery thread I used on my second go, yes the magnets are tenacious aren't they.

Thanks Galina, via Nada, for the excellent tutorial, so thorough & what a neat job. I have some of these snaps & haven't used them.
Tracy, I like your bag very much, very smart, lovely handle (I bet that wasn't cheap!). Did you handsew it onto the bag?

Yes the handle has pre punched holes to sew through, not difficult, it is real leather. I thought it a good price, £10.45 /$13 for two and I used one of course. It is the first leather handle I have used. I also like Galina's method regarding the fastener, but I felted the body and flap separately days apart so I could not do it this way successfully. I like bags with integrated flaps but thought this was nice too with the stitching and contrast colour on the back. It is lined and pocketed.

I forgot to say, it's a lovely bag Tracey. I'm sure you'll be able to manage the snapfastener successfully.

if you can think ahead ( I almost never do) you can put a piece of fabric in between the layers where you snap will go then you can sew through it as well. I have an old wooden spool of button thread that is great. I have no idea if they still make button thread. it is thick and strong. I imagine it is very similar to upholstery thread.
