It looks lovely. I was thinking about wool direction in the layout too it always shrinks in the most in the direction of the most wool.

Thanks Ruth I sure hope next time is THE time to get things right.
I laid out in each direction, silk layer first, one layer diagonal, one prefelt in the centre and two layers in different directions plus the top decorative layer. It is lovely and supple and looks good (the color mix). I am reviewing all my measuring to see if I made a mistake, and yes the table needs to be big - Mine is 3 ft x 7ft and I can extend it to 4 1/2ft with a larger board slid under all the layers of blanket and bubble wrap.I also have an old extension dining table as a back up that gives me almost as much again if I need it- lucky I have a big studio space. I didn't have enough of the silk to do a full sample and I "think" Ann that my problem is again the prefelt, as this is what happened to my last vest although it did shrink all round so was still wearable - just shorter than I wanted.

GRRR am sooo disappointed, my vest doesn't fit me..length is fine (3/4 coat length) but a few sizes too small around the bust and hips to fit.It looks lovely and felted well but the shrinkage was so much more in one direction that it will now fit my daughter who is a skinny one.LOL Oh well maybe I can sell it for more wool. I will have to change the pattern to a more generous width now. Here it is still wet without shoulders sewn. I admit to abandoning it one the table once I saw how it had shrunk. Will View Attachment get back to it today and finish and dry it.This is the layout before wetting down. It more jade than blue but for some reason the camera makes it look more blue. There is also the same jade in the silk. View AttachmentA lovely vest, but how disappointing for you! All need not be lost, you could insert some feature "expansion" pieces, perhaps some lace insertions??

It's a pretty vest Sue so don't be too disappointed with it because it doesn't fit you - it will fit someone else. Be proud of it.

The vest looks great, even though it’s not a fit for you. Perhaps when you make your next vest, you could leave out the pre-felt and go for another layer or layers of roving instead. Personally, I’ve found that when I use pre-felt, it sometimes messes up my calculations.

Judith that is a great idea to save Sue B's size miscalculations.

My daily dose was dyeing more fiber, this time cotton. Nothing was drying because of the cold and gloom, so I pulled everything off the deck to inside. Ten minutes later, sunshine. Of course.

Judith that is a good idea and I will have a ook at it in more detail when I go through my 'stash' . Doubt I am really that good a seamstress but will see .The vest is steamed, stretched and drying but is many sizes too small for me so I think my daughter or a good friend who is a tiny size six might get it. I will have my friend model it to take a pic and see what she thinks of it.

Thanks, Sue. The pieces on the left were dyed with madder, and the pillowcase on the right was dyed with cutch.

That sounds like a lot of layers, Sue. I too would suggest you omit pre-felt. I allow around 40% shrinkage for nuno vests, but of course it depends how far you full it. If you are fulling in a tumble drier, for instance, you'll probably get more shrinkage. & as others have said, it will shrink more in the direction the fibres are laid - & in the direction you roll it - so if it was rolled side to side rather than top to bottom, that'll account for it, too. You could re-wet it & pull it hard horizontally - it perhaps won't fit you but could be made a little wider - isn't felt amazing!
Shame, it was such lovely silk. I hope you have enough left for another try.

You have to be careful with commercial prefelt. It shrinks more one way than the other. I can't remember if it's width or the length.
Nice dye job Cathy. do you have plans for everything of just doing some dying for fun.

Jill it was three layers plus silk and embellishing but yes I will certainly leave off the prefelt next time- I was hedging my bets by using it to ensure no holes - didn't work in another way but certainly no holes. I think as I have another seven prefelts to use up I will allow 50% shrinkage AND make samples first - it is just that the printed silks are not long lengths and just fitted so none to spare for samples. I turned after every 20 rolls so it had a good go in every direction. The wool layout was in oppsite directions so theoretically it should have worked- but didn't- darn prefelt got me again. will I never learn.
So no Jill none of that lovely colour left at all - not a scrap. But several entirely different lengths waiting in the wings until I can know I won't waste them.
Cathy I am not familiar with Cutch can you tell us the Latin name so I can look it up?
Judith what size sample do you make first? square or oblong?
