I am aiming to make a hat with linked but still moving parts.... but all the parts keep threatening to felt together into one solid mass and the parts that should felt together aren't co-operating :/
This one is clearly going to be an exercise in patience (not my forte). As Ruth says, it is a challenge after all!

I too have been planning my 1st Q challenge - an octopus vessel... we'll see whether it ever sees the light of day, except Teri's sounds even harder, so good luck Teri!

An octopus - that sounds like a great subject, really looking forward to seeing the result Jill

Did some felting yesterday on my cat cave. I made a few mistakes, however--the kind that aren’t reparable. Starting fresh tomorrow. Wondering what to do with my mistake…perhaps some garment sewing today, a patchwork might be in order! ;-(
A hat with moving parts and an octopus--sounds really challenging. Good luck to all!

All these wonderful ideas - no pressure then??
Before I can give thought to something for the challenge I need to do some utility felting - my mum needs a new tea-cosy - still, it will get me in the right frame of mind for resist work.

Weirdly enough, I get inspired to do Christmas stuff AFTER the holiday. I never have enough time before. I'm using some ancient fabric that I purchased "Just Because it's on Sale!" to make garlands and wreaths.
Cathy, I'd love to make a cat cave, but I'm holding off on purchasing the fiber for it until I have more room/get more organized. That's another thing I always get distracted by at the beginning of the year - Organizing! Besides, I'm not sure I want to spend that kind of time on something the cats probably won't use, as my DH pointed out. They don't use any of the several such cat things I've purchased in the past.
I can't wait to see the octopus and the hat with moving parts.

Recently I've made two pairs of slippers for children. I hope we'll get some sunshine tomorrow to take photos, then I'll post them here. Talking about cat caves - even though I've never made one - I hope some of you will find this information about cave sizes useful ( Ifound this on the Internet

What went wrong Cathy? Other than putting felt in the washing machine on the full cycle I can't think of many mistakes that are truly un-fixable. Great idea to recycle the "felt that went bad" though, its a fun exercise in creativity to turn a piece of drab ugly fabric into something beautiful Fab guide Nada - this is really useful and not something I have seen before, thank you for posting. Looking forward to seeing your slippers Elizabeth, don't take this the wrong way but you are just plain odd!! I am generally fed up with Christmas by the time we get to January, 3 months of Xmas music and tinsel should be enough for anyone!

Thanks, Teri. No offense taken. You're not the first, by far. I just saw so many ideas but has no time to work on them! I gave myself a treat after finally getting my holiday cards out (first time in 4-5 years!) Besides, I'm using up material that's been languishing forever.
Thanks for the guide, Nada. My cats are still at the medium stage. They strive for the large, but wee keep them on a strict diet. Wish they could do the same with us!!

Looking forward to seeing your Christmassy pieces Elizabeth, perhaps a cat cave with mistletoe dangling above the door?

Thanks for the cat cave guide, Nada, what a useful page. I thought I was making mine big enough last year, but had to cut it much more open, so it was more basket like than cave like...even then my cat didn't really fit in it! Good news is that my new kitten loves it, especially when he can manoeuvre it behind the wood burner so he gets really hot. Hope he doesn't grow too big but that's not looking likely as he wants to eat all day.
No octopus yet, but I think I have the resist worked out.

Wow, a lot of great Q1 challenge ideas. Like Lyn says "no pressure." :-) I can't wait to see them all.
Teri, you seem to have outdone yourself in terms of challenges.
Aphee thanks for the birthday wishes.

I hope I am not deterring anyone from having a go at the challenge with my nutty ideas. If you are new to felting and have never made a felt vessel or bag please, please have a go. I am the first to admit that I like to push the boundaries of what is technically possible (and I often fail), what is so great about this forum is the very different approaches that everyone takes for the challenges, I'm always impressed that it is usually the simple idea, executed well that is the most beautiful. Rest assured my hat will be ugly (it currently resembles an oversized fake turd (poo)).
