Any loose weave fabric will work. One of the less expensive options to start with is cheese cloth or scrim.

What other fabrics besides silk chiffon will felt well? That's hard to find around here without breaking the bank! (for 21 micron merino) I've not attempted nuno felting yet but am dying to try! Charity (thrift) shops are a good source of cheap fabrics. Ignore sizes or types of garment - just wander around looking at the fabric they are made from. Summer scarves are often surprisingly good!

Another cheap option is those cotton gauze squares for wounds. If something looks fluffy or 'woolly', like loosely woven scarves, they're quite likely to work too. I usually make sample pieces large enough to make something out of, but kept forgetting how different fabrics worked, so started making larger samplers with smaller strips (about & x 1.5 ") This is one of my favourite scarves, it was open weave, but a few layers and all ruffled with strands of elastane: angled 1 par Zedster01, on ipernity There are so many different fabrics and lots of different results

I brought some chiffon that was not silk.(polyester I think). I felted a sample and it worked well with some areas looser than others but extra fulling would overcome this I think.. This is the fabric.

Hope it works as a double sided vest! LOL. I am doing another sample today with a lighter fleece to see which works best with the imagery on the fabric...then comes the big job - 3 metres (yards) of fabric to layout and felt.

Thanks Zed,I ended up taking the chiffon off the table and replacing it with black & white lace as I wasn't sure I could felt 3 metres enough for the poly chiffon- doubting my ability here big time.LOL.
