I love visiting my thrift store searching for pretty fabrics. I get so disappointed, however when I find something pretty that's not silk. I've been hesitant to purchase them until learning about the 'breath test' on this forum (no, it's not the winey source for creativity) If you can feel your breath through the fabric, it should felt. So now I go thrifting and blowing on the fabrics. I'm sure I get strange looks. This weekend I decided to test the feltability of some of my finds. First of all, here are some new silky fibers from the thrift store. The rust brown one at the top is a drapery sheer – not silk. These are the man-made fabrics that I tested for feltability. The top right is a drapery sheer. The top left yellow is a nasty synthetic knit. The red in the lower left and the shiny white one above it definitely did not pass the breath test. The remainder did to varying degrees. I think all the others would be fine in felting, including the drapery sheer. close-up of the drapery sheer with lots of migration. I wonder how the fabric will feel around my neck?
Close-up of the red with a little migration
close-up of the white with hardly any migration - not unexpected.

That's a lovely lot of samples! It's great to know that there are many fabrics that allow wool to migrate through.

Such a good idea to do those test pieces, I expect you'll be able to tell better now in the shop when you find a 'possible'. Were some more work & took longer to felt than others?

I 'don't have permission to view the picture'. It's nice to have a good variety of fabrics to nuno with because they all give different results

I should have mentioned that the merino wool was very fine = 15.5 microns. I'm sure that had a lot to do with how they felted. I 'subjected' all of the pieces to the same process - just handrolling for a while, then full, then some more vigorous rolling. Nothing special, really.

Zed, can you not see the photos in the post? Is there some setting I should use in Flickr?

Not all "breathable" fabric is felt able. I'll try to post pics later. I think sometimes even in the stores the content is not always correctly marked.

I can see them in the post, elizabeth, but when I click to see them bigger, it says I don't have permission. I don't know about the settings.

I can't see a bigger pic when I click on them either. I am directed to a Yahoo login and since I don't have Yahoo; I can't see them. I'm not sure if this is the same problem Zed ran into, but, I just wanted to mention what I get when I click on the pics. Hope this helps sort out the issue.

OK> I went into Flickr and set the privacy on those photos to Public. Let me know if that works.

it interesting to see how different weaves felt. I did a post with different fiber a couple of summers ago but now I can't find it.

What other fabrics besides silk chiffon will felt well? That's hard to find around here without breaking the bank! (for 21 micron merino) I've not attempted nuno felting yet but am dying to try!
