One of my new students has Huskies and wants to felt using their fur, has anyone had experience of this and what should be we be looking out for? new techniques to try out? does it need to be mixed with other fibres?

Why doesn't she just try it? That would be interesting. I've seen videos about sweaters made of dog's fur (spinning is obviously not a problem), perhaps felt could be made too.

I have seen felted dog fur. It actually depends on the animal how well it will felt. Just my opinion, but I don't think it is a good idea for a beginner to start with an unknown fiber (in how well it will felt) because they need to understand the basics of felting before experimenting with a fiber that might not felt so well. But that is up to you. Just thinking you might spend a lot of time with that one student trying to get dog fur to felt.
Also, many people have allergies to dogs. I know that when I was around some knitted dog fur hats, they really made me sneeze, eyes run etc.
I sound like an old wet rag - sorry.

Oh and I forgot - the outer layer of Husky fur might not felt, probably just the inner layers.

Ditto Ruth to your sentiments, I do feel the same, and I hadn't thought of allergies, they maybe have a soft under coat, intially I'll get her to mix it with merino just to get the feel of it - fingers crossed its washed!!! :-)

Some dog undercoat felts well others don't. To spin it is usually mixed with wool because it is short. The only stuff I have done shed like crazy. It was a custom order pillow and stuffed with dog hair too. I told her is would shed and she was happy with that.
