Thanks everyone Cathy, I used silk hankies over the section that is in the folds and silk tops over the rest. Frances, it's not for anyone in particular but I am planning on taking my hats to Weyfest (a local music festival in September) and they were a hit last year. Jill, the resist was quite long (there's a picture of the layout on my blog - there's a link below) to start with, it's amazing how quickly the folds eat up the length . Woolfest was amazing, definitely worth the trip just to meet new people and feel their products, I blogged about it here teriberrycreations.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/woolfest-2015.html

I love what you have created with those gorgeous fibres, the silks compliment the merino so well, you obviously have a good eye for colour.

I did some more dyeing yesterday, bamboo staple, some bamboo top, cotton top, ramie, viscose top and rose top. I was surprised that the tops stayed in their 'strips' as they really spread out when soaked in water. I only soaked cotton, ramie and rose initially, but once I saw they'd not just en up as 'fluff', I did the bamboo and viscose too. I'm sure there are some differences, but to me, the rose, bamboo and viscose all look very similar after dyeing, and apart from the novelty factor of being from rose or bamboo, don't add anything. I think I'll save my money and just buy viscose top for dyeing in future if I ever run out

Thanks Lyn
Good to know Zed - I am always tempted to buy any fibre I haven't already played with expecting it to be different but often disappointed to find I already have something very similar...

I've spent 2 days trying to attach a flikr link but I keep getting javascript errors when I tried to preview it (yes, I did read the post with the directions). I even tried 2 different computers.I'm forcing myself to go back and do some basic shapes. I've become very impatient with my fibers, so I tried to make a jellyroll. I laid several layers of fibers, then rolled them up tightly and put them in an old knee-high. I rolled it for about an hour, probably less, then wrapped it with rubber bands and set it on the washer to see what the machines could do. Yes, I am aware of what these look like. It was the source of much eye-waggling by my husband. Before I threw it in the washer & dryer I cut off one end to keep unprocessed for comparison. Here is that: The left went thru the machines, the right did not. There was not a lot of shrinkage in either direction. Also the cut end of the roll felted in with the nylon quite completely. feltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/skswxi_d4rlmyfnwsoua.jpgfeltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/xlxf9d2uojnta3numm9o.jpgfeltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/p9yihgypr0k0x5deswxf.jpg

I plan to cut the rolls into 'coins' and use them like prefelts. We'll see how they two work.

Cool idea Elizabeth. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with the flikr links.

Elizabeth, the one in the machines, will that be too felted to use as prefelt? I'll be interested to hear how the cutting goes. It is a neat idea to use them as prefelt ,
