Welcome to the forum Liz. I like the look of your scarf. I have not tried much Alpaca but just recently I made a scarf with a mix of Alpaca/Merino and I found it really hairy, so thanks for the idea of shaving it :-) Jane

You should see a bag I made once, Jane! I'd tried these awful alpaca tops once and didn't like them, but thought I'd give them another go on a bag. It's terrible ... feltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/alpaca-bag.jpgI don't know where they got the fibre from, but it wasn't like any alpaca I'd used before.

The pic of your purse, that looks like a lot of guard hair. Was it Llama by chance? If it was alpaca, it might have been from their legs. I grade my alpacas fiber, so for next to skin, it is the finest blanket, which also felts easily. For the dryer balls that I make and sell, it is usually my coarser alpacas (older ones) and their leg fibers. Yes as shaving helps, then I give it a good shake so it does not shed the first few times wearing it.

I don't know what it was, some commercial alpaca tops. I wouldn't be surprised to find it was some weird alpaca-plastic hybrid, though plastic isn't as bad! I stick to proper stuff now

Hello Liz! I looked up your location and we found it to be around Black Lake which my DH has been to many times.. Lovely area... I made my first clutch/IPad case from all Alpaca (hand dyed) and I found it to be very soft and it was not fuzzy at all... Picture below.. By any chance will you be attending the Northern Michigan Lamb &Wool Festival coming up on September 26/27th of September.. I have been to it several times and loved it.. Also the Fall colors are very nice this time of year..

Hi Judy, Yes, Black Lake is not too far, maybe 12 miles as the crow flies. We use to live in Onaway which is only 5 miles from the Black Lake State Park. Not all alpaca is hairy when it felts. I find sometimes the coarser fiber does. I like your purse/case that you made. No, I do not do that show as it is the same weekend that we do an Open House here at the ranch for National Alpaca Days. If your ever up this way, I do have a farm store where I sell my fiber, yarns, finished products and you can see the pacas. Liz

I've purchased some alpaca from a local farmer and haven't had much luck with felting it either. It will felt but it takes a little longer and the result is kind of stiff. I do have some alpaca mixed with silk roving that feels much different

Hello Liz, Do you have a website for your Alpaca Farm? Or photos of any of the things you sell in your store?

That's too bad Marilyn. Was it prepped as roving or a batt?
Judy, yes I do have a website that is not finished, as my daughter was supposed to do it for me. I will now have to finish it. I wanted a part of it to be a gallery of all things I have made. I post a ton of pics on Social media such as FaceBook and Twitter. I have a blog that I have not wrote on for over two years I think. I need to get better at that. I use to have a virtual store on Artfire, but it also became too time consuming and was not selling enough to make it worthwhile. I am still deciding where to post my pics so I can share here.
Liz

Liz, it was dyed and just pieces stuffed in a ziplock bag. Since the owner is a felter herself, I'm sure uses the good stuff. I'm sure I'll find a use for it. :-)

Marilyn,
I find that that alpaca felts faster when it has been carded into a batt. I only use pieces that have not been prepped inside my dryer balls that I make, which are then wrapped with a batt around them. I also sometimes use pieces for needle felting. Liz

Thanks Liz! I believe I have used small amounts in batts, but I'll,definitely give that idea a go.
