Men’s Driving Cap
An existing Cap was used as a model for designing the Hat Block and the Resist for felting.
Hat Block
1. Used the cap as a guide to draw a template on wax paper for the base of the hat block. The size is a 10” x 7” Oval.
2. Then placed a Styrofoam circle in the center of the oval with a half circle of Styrofoam on both ends. This was the starting point for making the mould. The Styrofoam helped with the shaping and also kept from having such a thick amount of paper Mache.
3. Mixed the paper Mache with less water than the instructions called for to get a consistency similar to modeling clay. Then covered the Styrofoam with the mixture shaping it as it was applied.
4. Let the Block dry for 24 hours. Sprayed with Polyurethane according to the can directions giving it 3 coats. This made the paper Mache water resistant so wet felt could be placed on it.
Felting
1. Made a resist about 2 inches larger that the size of the finished hat. Used Merino and had tested it and knew that size would handle the shrinkage.
2. Covered both sides of the resist with the merino and felted until it was a firm but still pliable felt.
3. Cut the opening for the head (SCARY).
4. Stretched the piece over the Hat Block overlapping the “bill” of the cap on the underside of the Block and making the folds on the front part of the cap. Let dry for 24 hours.
