I started this about a week ago and kept getting side lined and was not even sure I would finish it but since I had everything necessary to complete the project I continued with it and am glad I did. It is really quite pretty. You might want to bookmark this to remind you to consider it when you start thinking about 2015 Christmas Projects. Also those of you who do landscapes - a dark sky with lights (stars) might be interesting.
I drew a tree shape on a piece of polyester quilt batting (fiberfill) as a guide and then layered my roving on it and felted lightly. I did not felt hard because I wanted a lot of texture. I used several shades of green and some light green bamboo fiber. Originally I started sewing tiny beads on it but that is not work I enjoy and I wanted something larger so I removed the beads. I added stick on crystals (ok for this project but would not use for anything that is going to be handled). I still was not satisfied so I added some iridescent cord (sewn on).
Painted a 16x20 inch stretched canvas on a frame red (did not like solid red) so went back and added gold glitter paint over the red.
Lay tree on the back of the canvas and trace around it. Measure the space between the lights to determine spacing. Use an Awl or ice pick to punch holes in the canvas for where the lights will go.
Glue the tree to the front of the canvas with hot glue.
To add the lights, use the awl to punch through your previously made holes through the felt. You may need to use a screwdriver to enlarge the holes in the canvas and the felt. Insert lights. Remember to place lights so the plug will be on the bottom of the canvas. The canvas frame should be deep enough to conceal the lights so that the tree can be hung on the wall.
• 40 lights were used.
• Batting was used to give thickness without using a lot of roving which I did not have. Batting is easy to felt over and keep the desired shape.
This is a time when a really miss my Mom and Aunts - they were in personal care homes and would have been thrilled with my making this and hanging it on their wall. Make memories!!
