This was the first time I had tried embedding an object into a project. I started with an 8 inch circle as a resist. After I had put a base of roving down I added four seashells and and placed roving over them and then felted. After felting I cut cut a small hole in the center and removed the resist. I them put a balloon in the hole and blew it up and shaped the bow. I cut slits to reveal the shells. Two felted in really well - two I had to add some fabric glue to make them secure. After it dried I was not happy with it. It had not felted hard enough. So I made a bigger opening, dipped it into heavy starch (the first time I have used startch) and formed it over a bowl and left it to dry again. I was still not completely happy with the coloring so I added some needle felting to add some more dimension. This is the final project. Pictures taken from different sides/angles - their are 4 shells placed around the bowl. 1 2

Frances, the final bowl looks nice and turned out just fine. Sometimes we have to experiment to get the results we want.

Hello Frances, your ocean bowl is lovely and it always fun experimenting with new techniques. Pretty shades of blue... I have never dipped any felted project in starch before, did turn out as hard as glass???

Hello Frances, your ocean bowl is lovely and it always fun experimenting with new techniques. Pretty shades of blue... I have never dipped any felted project in starch before, did turn out as hard as glass??? Yes, it is very hard but could still bend a little - I used a premixed liquid startch and did not dilute it. It did not have any effect on the colors - Also I kept turning it while it was drying to keep the starch from ending up all at the top or bottom.

Judy – The finished scarf is 45 inches long and 4 inches wide – it is made of a merino silk blend from Opulent Fibers. I made a pattern on the back side of the bubble wrap with a sharpie showing the outline of the scarf and the holes and then laid my roving around the holes so there was no cutting involved. Once the roving was wet I used my fingers to finish forming the openings and then felted as normal. These pictures should give you a better idea of the layout – I counted and there are 29 holes. The scarf I ran through the felted scarf is about 60 inches long. This is a fun way to give a gift – 3 ways to use a scarf in one present! 1 2

I love that strong blue of the bowl and impressed with the shells, interesting to hear how the starch worked too. I did a fine merino vessel and feel it needs a bit of firming up so might look for some starch. And I love that orange scarf with the holes.
