Started a new project last evening in what I will call mixed media for lack of a better term. I decided to do a Greek Isle landscape, highlighting the Isle of Santorini. You may be familiar with it, or at least the iconic post card pics with whitewashed buildings on a hill and a very blue Aegean Sea.
In any case, I set things up by snipping small buildings from homemade pre-felts, but I did not have all of the colors I needed, so I grabbed some commercial felt pieces--not the icky craft stuff, but felt I have bought on-line which is part wool, part rayon. So now I have some homemade pre felts, commercial ones, and some miscellaneous bits of nuno silk pieces I have created in the past.
The problem is, I am ready to wet-felt, but I am worried that the commercial stuff will not felt. I have tried overlapping homemade pieces with commercial ones, but even that might be a problem. I could needle-felt but would like to try the wet felt first.
Has anybody done anything like this before? Any advice?

I don't know if it will help the mixed prefelt, but I usually take the felt brush and just go over the prefelt before laying anything over it. It's just an up and down motion but it pulls up the wool so it will grab what ever is on top. You could also put wisps of wool between. Or you could always needle felt it a little after if it doesn't catch. But I'm sure it will. I can't imagine if it's even part wool that it wouldn't felt properly. Good luck!

I think it will felt my only concern with the mix of prefelts and felt is that they will not shrink the same. I would go slowly so everything has a chance to catch and if you can brush up the back of the commercial felt as Marilyn suggested I think it should work.

If it's anything like the commercial felt I have, I'd have thought it would be far too dense, it's hard to say without seeing or feeling it though. Ann has a good point too about shrinkage.

Good suggestions, all! I had not thought about the shrinkage, which could be a problem, as I was more focused on "would it felt?" I will try the brush today, wet everything down and give it a go.

I'm probably too late, but do you have a few spare pieces to do a quick sample?

Not too late, Zed! Against my better judgment I agreed to meet some family members for a burger yesterday, and my tummy suffered all day and night! Just not used to burger fare anymore. Lesson learned. So I do have spare pieces and will try a sample later today. Why didn't I think of that?

Commercial Pre-felt Samples by catwycliff, on Flickr Although not a great photo, these are the commercial pre-felt samples I tried felting with wool roving, per Zed's suggestion. It was quite useful, because it turned out that all felted well except for the light blue pieces, which I afterwards remembered did not come from the same on-line shop as did the others. I plan to eliminate that piece from the overall landscape, which is in progress. My current plan is to wet-felt the entire piece (minus the light blue commercial pre-felt piece) onto a bed of Domestic 56's wool roving, then take another look. More photos later!

Good thing you did the sample then. I am not good at doing samples. I am looking forward to seeing your progress.

Note: Closing off this thread because the Santorini landscape was a bomb! It turned out to be a bit of a hodgepodge, not at all what I envisioned. Putting it aside for now.

Doh!! Empathy coming your way. Sooooo frustrating when that happens. I try to be positive and regard it as part of the learning curve ... but only after I've stamped my feet and said a few rude words.
