Great post. I would like to see Cathy's piece from an angled view so it shows how it looks on the stretcher bars. Also, Cathy, did you cover the back or leave it as shown on the blog?

Both are great wall-worthy pieces. Interesting that they were executed in different ways.

Would you like to see the piece angled from the front or back? I actually have not yet covered the back, but I am thinking I probably should do so. I reviewed once again your blog on framing and finishing, and note you sometimes add a piece of board to the back. Is that the best treatment for stretcher bars, or are you thinking of something else?

Hello Cathy and Marilyn, I also have the same book I bought a year or so ago and found it very inspirational. Both your projects looked great and found them very informative on how your approached them.

Cathy I am having some pictures framed at the moment and he said he would cover the backs of canvases with paper. Have you both signed you peices? You should they are both signature worthy. I just bought some Iron on name tape you can write on to sign mine.

Cathy - I meant an angled view from the front or perhaps just the piece hanging on the wall would work. For the back, I usually use commercial felt - last time I fused it to the back of the stretcher bars. I haven't used a wood backing - that might get a bit heavy.

Thanks Ann and Judy!
Ann, I haven't signed mine yet, I still need to figure out how to frame it. This always seems to be the bigger challenge for me -- finishing. I will probably go on a major spree one day just doing nothing but framing, I have a very tall pile building up. :-)

So, Ruth, what you are saying is that after backing the felted work with commercial felt (I did that also on two pieces including the Moy), you leave the back blank? I will take a photo of the Moy piece hanging tomorrow.
Ann, I haven't signed my piece yet…how do you do that with felt--in the back or on the front with name tape? I had planned on using the handy fabric labels that Ruth showed in her "framing and finishing" blog…but that's on the back.
Thanks for your nice comments, Judy and Ann!

I have not used commercial felt to back the original felt piece. I meant to cut a square of felt, put the stretcher bar face down (with original felt piece not showing) and cover the back of the stretcher bars with a piece of commercial felt.
If you use one of the fabric labels you can sign that.

I think they're both lovely - I did much the same thing using Van Gogh's sunflowers as my subject. I wet felted the background and needle felted the detail. I then velcroed the felt onto a hessian covered canvas - Here is the end result.

Lovely sunflowers nettiegray! Cathy - You could use upholstery base cloth to finish the back, after all it's doing a similar job. It's cheap and easy to use.
