I want to make beret's. having made pods I thought a similar approach would work, but alas it didn't really come out as I intended. Has anyone had a go at beret's, if so do you have any tips? Here is my dog Magnus modelling my first attempt, Mr C the cat came with his own hat :-)

I have no experience with making berets, but I assume it must be very similar to making a pod/bowl. If your first attempt hasn't resulted in a beret for you, Magnus seems quite happy with wearing it no material is wasted.

It is very similar to start with to making a pod and you use a round resist. Ann posted her beret-making with photos not so long ago - I've had a quick look but I can't find the thread! Help please Ann.

Yes, I use a round resist, bigger than you think you need so you have more room for the beret to be "floppy". Cut the hole smaller than you think you need for the head opening as it will enlarge. You can always cut more if you need to near the end of fulling. I don't put anything inside when I do the fulling as I don't really want it to be spherical when finished. Here's Ann's post: feltingandfiberstudio.com/2014/05/16/a-felt-beret/

Thank you, yes I cut the hole out from the circle resist, and it did get bigger, Ruth that's good advice start small and enlarge if necessary, I made the initial circle dinner plate size yet another learning curve!! Thanks for the link to Ann's post, it's exactly what I want :-) my other dilemma was making the band to fit on my head, but I can Ann has shown how to do this. My hat is more a post box hat, I think it suits Magnus better :-)

I showed up late and you all have it taken care of. a hole of maybe 3 inches across is big enough the hole will grow and you can stretch it if necessary.

You can always sew on a band around the hole if you want a wide one. you can fold it a different way and get another cool look too. I got this from Cad Alice Hagen's hat book but I am sure it's been around for longer than that.

Carole I've made two berets in my life. Used resist 50cm diameter. But I use very thin layers.

I am still laughing at Magnus the model. Ha ha. None of my dogs would ever let me do that to them.

I've always liked berets and think they are always fashionable in some sets. And then there's the pillbox hat, made famous by Jackie Kennedy…quite a nice look for your dog.
