I had not heard of Helen McAllister until this morning, but I was very intrigued with this article about her. We may never how or why we do what we do, but she certainly has persevered. I found this my newsfeed on FB from Textile Artist. www.textileartist.org/dragging-my-heels-helen-mcallister/

Those things look nice, but I can't tell what anything is. I have been out today, so maybe it's just me. Fish? Sycamore seeds? I like that pile of tassley art yarn, gorgeous colours.

They do look like fish shoes. I think she specializes in shoes and uses a variety of fiber works and embroidery to create different looks. I think the point is she's found her niche after many years of experimenting and overcoming her fear of failing and not fitting in.

I thought the article was interesting, it seems such a shame to put that much work into something and all we get are 'arty' shots. I'd like to seem them better.

There was a website listed for her, perhaps she has a gallery. I didn't check yet.

Thanks for sending the link for H. Mcallister's work. It really is intriguing, some of it quite elaborate. I enjoy seeing all kinds of textile artists' work, and I have been following that link as well. Of course, I don't have time to read every article, so it's nice to have a note sent along the way.

I think the point is she's found her niche after many years of experimenting and overcoming her fear of failing and not fitting in. There's also the fear that many of us have that we are 'not qualified'. I didn't go to college and didn't study textiles. So I love this quote: With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable. ~Thomas Foxwell Buxton

That is a good quote Lyn. I do think perseverance is the most important quality.

I have no degrees, but have taken some college courses in Design and Art History. Although these were very helpful, I was an artist before I took the classes and have learned infinitely more from my own personal studies and experience in different media. It is about being original, and working hard. One of the questions that always puzzels me most about remarks people make to me is, "I love this, but I don't think I can keep it clean." Really?

Dust would be a problem for me. we have to many animals and am a bad housekeeper. I would have to shadow box anything with dimension.
