In my attempt to keep my brain young (yeah right) I am continuing my art education. Mostly self taught on You Tube. I took 2 lessons with a fellow artist who does pastels in a commercial or illustrator style. He showed me how to use the products and taught me about different surfaces. But my finished work was more his style than mine, so I did not continue with him. I like the work I did in his class, but it didn't seem like mine. So I began practicing with soft pastel and have now added pastel pencil for details and texture. Here is my third rendition of a white cat and I feel like it could be my signature style for pastel. I am also learning watercolor. Took 2 lessons from a fellow artist, but didn't want to work in her style either, so You Tube is my teacher now. Attachments:

I love learning too! It keeps your mind active, that's for sure. Nice job on the cat. I do think it is important to always try to develop your own style. Once you learn the basics, then it's important just to keep practicing but avoiding someone else's style is a good thing in my opinion.

Nice cat! It's a lovely style. I love to keep learning as well and experimenting. I don't know if I'll ever have a style of anything. I keep finding new things to try. :-)
My mom used to do pastel drawings. I have tried it and still have my pastels, it's way at the bottom of my very long list now though. Kudos to you for keeping at it.

Very striking cat portrait! Like you, I love learning new things and am constantly striving to vary my approach to fiber art--whether it's trying new fibers, dyeing new colors, or trying new techniques. I take my inspiration from nature, strong memories, and other artists' work but agree it is important to develop one's own style. In addition, there is much research to suggest that as we age, learning new things keeps us younger--and I'm all for that!

I am now experimenting with mixed media. I just finished an experiment using watercolor on watercolor paper, adding acrylic inks and blot as I go, chalk pastel wet with a brush works like strong watercolor, and pastel pencil. At the end, I highlight with the chalk pastel. This is the reason why I don't like to go to teachers. I have worked with art for so long that I need to find my own way of doing things or I am not happy. So this now has be wondering about doing this on fabric. Pastel is soluble. Stronger color than watercolors. And I have already used acrylic on fabric. I will have to try it.

I bet the colours will look great, and strong, will you have to do something to make them stay in the fibres or will they just dye? can't wait to see what you do.
