Hi Lee, For saving fingers, get in the habit of always poking down towards the surface of your foam. I still stab myself regularly when I'm working on something that requires me to hold it in my hand. For little pieces, I love these silly finger protectors: www.etsy.com/listing/66355687/needle-felting-finger-guards-protectors $5, and you'll save that much in bandaids. Plus the flat sides can really help with needling edges on flat pieces (think the edge of an ear, for example.) Happy felting!

Shana, I like your avatar. Thanks Pandagirl! It was one of my first 'complex' needle-felted sculptures. The "lashes" were wet-felted, then attached to the bowl, and the whole thing is on a bendable armature. About 11" tall.

Love your felted pieces, like you I'm always stabbing myself too, I've found that felting at an angle results in less painful stabs, I have a cushion pad I needle felt over and it has drops of blood all over it!!! and they hurt, keep up your addiction these are great :-)

Wow, for your first attempts, you're obviously a natural I agree with Leonor; the stabbing does get less with time. When I first started, it was felt, felt, felt, OUCH! and another plaster on, but now it's quite rare that I stab myself, you just get used to it. And what Amanda said about slowing down is really true also. I think the main thing is to try as many different types of fiber as you can. There will be one or two types that are your favourite to work with. With me it's Alpaca, but most needle felters seem to find it too difficult to work with, and it is a bit harder to felt with it, but it is my definite favourite anyway. You'll find that different types of wool give different results, and just trying them all out will give you so much experience. Have lots and lots of fun!
