I have been doing a lot of teaching classes, taking classes and getting ready for Summer exhibits. I was surprised this morning at my Intuitive Color class. I teach how to do an interpretation from your own photos. Not copying the photo, but interpreting it in color. I thought this might not be as interesting to quilters, as it would be to artists. But no. I was wrong. Not only did they love this class, they wanted me to teach another class on Modern Quilts. This is a real change from past years, when we were dominated by traditionalists. Modern Art quilts were pretty much scoffed at. I wonder if new ideas are becoming popular in other fiber arts? Mixed media seems to be crossing all lines. Just an interesting observation.

People seem to be more interested in experimenting than in the past. They want to try new things. I think maybe its because people are coming to the arts later and without formal training so they do not have the rules ingrained. They will ask well why can't I do this or that way. Why and what if are an acceptable questions now.

That's great Judy! Your class sounds so interesting. Have you considered doing an online class?

It sounds like you've worn them down, Judy, from what you've said in the past they've been resistant, they must like your work and teaching methods a lot to get inspired.

I agree with Ann's statement about many folks coming to art classes later in life and wanting to experiment with new techniques and mixed media. Also, many retirees find themselves in relatively good health and with time on their hands. The internet--I think--has played a huge role in spreading the "new" arts and opportunities for getting involved in mixed media.
Just had a first look at your website, Judy, and I think your work is marvelous!

Way to go Judy! It's great that you've gotten them turned around a bit and willing to try new things.

I am really serious about this. The change is astounding. You can remember my venting all my frustration when people came to my class and then tried to do everything in a traditional manner. I could not pull them away from using patterns and focusing on every little flaw. I even told them that I did not want to teach because I didn't think people were interested. Of course, they need people to teach and keep asking me. So when I walked in and saw the top traditional quilters, who previous told me that they did not like art quilts, I thought I was in the wrong class. I even asked if it was the right day. Ha ha. And this time, it was a whole new world. I think that exposure to new ideas is what keeps us young and vital. I never run out of inspiration because I am always searching for it. I know you agree. Thanks for all the encouragement. And, I really do need a vacation.
