I am going to mount this picture. It's the one from my avatar. It is pinned to my curtain wall covering at the moment. I am going to sew it to a canvas but I am wondering do you think painting it black would work and how much bigger than the picture should the canvas be? The picture is about 24x16 inches 61x40cm.

I'm having a similar problem with a couple of my pieces. The problem with painting the canvas black is that it may not be a true black. That's what I found. Also, if your pic is that size what's the next available size or are you going to stretch your own? I would think one to two inches around would be adequate. I'll be interested to watch your progress! My pile is getting bigger.

I'd mount it on white - look at it above - it looks great on white!

I will have to take it with me and see what they have, size wise. I will take pictures. When I looked for a ready made shadow box frame for it nothing worked. for myself I would prefer it behind glass so I don't have to clean it. we have way to much dust and animal fur. But if I sell it, it will probably be fine without.

Shadow box was my preference for the autumn challenge, but I'm waiting for a really good sale. They are expensive especially for sizes over 16x/20. Good luck!

I agree with Lyn that white would be better than black. Or you could choose one of the colors in the piece. I would give 2" around at the most. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I also like the wall hanging on the white..it's very cool, Ann. Marilyn, do you choose the shadow box because of the inset, giving it depth? Do you use glass on it?

A shadow box allows there to be space between the felt work and the glass.

Got it, so if you had spikes or other embellishments...

Cathy, I'll have to see how the picture looks. I'd prefer not to use the glass, but Ann does make a point about keeping it clean. There are a few things I have to decide on like the background color. I haven't had much luck finding a color in the artwork for the background. Which means I may have to resort to painting one to put behind it. I'd like to get it done and hung, but with Fiona's class and travel I don't think it will happen soon. :-)

Make sure it's non-reflective glass!
Luvswool - not just for spikes - any felt piece has texture which would be flattened in the traditional framing method with glass.

Ann, if you decide to paint your canvas, look for 'matt' acrylic (usually more liquid) or even matt car undercoat spray paint. Do you want me to try some different backgrounds for you on Photoshop? If so, email me a good sized photo and I'll try a variety for you.

I wanted to share this idea, but didn't know where to put it, so here feels appropriate.
The town I live near is well known for it's woodcarvers, and I am friendly with a few, today I gave my work to one guy to have a look at as he was interested in what I was doing.
He has suggested a great organic way of mounting work, he has suggested a flat piece of wood, with it's bark on the edges, larger than the felted piece, then burning the wood and placing the felted piece somewhere along the piece wherever it feels right - I've left my stuff with him and he is going to discuss it with his colleagues - I'm really excited to hear what they come up with - watch this space :-)
