I am planning to make a coat. I was thinking of buying pre-felt and I have some questions. I don't know how much prefelt I need to buy. If I take into account shrinkage, do you think the 1.6 factor for calculating the size of the template would be enough? And another question: do you think if would be wise to put silk underneath and then only put embellishments on the top? I assume the wool and other things I am going to put on top need not cover the whole area. Any suggestions and advice from your own experience would be welcome.

Sorry Nada! No help from me, I've never even tried to make a coat...

I haven't either. I do have experience of buying rubbish coats and shirts though, and would advise lifting your arms above your head and also crossing your arms (like you're hugging yourself) when measuring for the coat

First I will say it is easier to make yardage and sew it. It will give you a better fit too. A compromise alternative is to do the body seamless and put the sleeves in separate.
Having said that yes silk will felt in and putting embellishments on top will work fine. Most important get some of the prefelt you plan to use and do a sample for shrinkage. Do a good sized sample with the silk and embellishments. do not assume a shrinkage rate. The prefelt I have used shrinks more one way than the other. Also if you are going seamless you need to make sure you can split the prefelt so you can overlap the seems without ending up with to much bulk.

Thank you Ann - I am planning to make a sample first and probably will make the front and the back seamless, sleeves separate. However, if I still feel I'm too uncertain I will just make yardage and sew the coat.

Wow Halay, that's quite a project. I've never made a coat out of felt. You're wise to do a sample first. My experience using prefelt on two sided scarves is that there wasn't as much shrinkage as I expected. Good luck! I look forward to seeing your new coat!

I would buy extra prefelt than what you think you need. You can always use it for something else but you don't want to run short. The silk underneath would give you more strength and you wouldn't need to make the prefelt layers so thick. Unless you want a heavy winter coat, then you'd need more layers of prefelt. When sampling, you might try different thicknesses so you know how thick you want the end product to be. Good luck. We'd love to see your process as you go along.

Halay it is a big project but can be satisfying. I have done several peices. I am thinking of doing some vest if I can work out a way to do it easily. well its one of the possibilities on the list of maybe I shoulds.
