I need your help again. I used a lot of your suggestions for putting together my color class, which had to be put on hold for a while because I have become the victim of my own success. But the opportunity came up to put on a one hour lecture and show and tell of Mixed Media Fiber Art. What is it. This invitation has come from the Southwest Missouri High School Teachers Association and will be held at one of the local colleges. Please tell me how you would have high school students make felt. They have no access to sewing machines nor would they be able to do needle felting. It would have to be some easy wetfelting. And it would have to be done as a group project. I have some ideas on this, but tell me how you would conduct a high school felting project.

I would do it the same way you would do primary school kids. You should get better results. you can have them do small peices. put Them inside a zip loch bag to work them. you could do it on a theme like have everyone make leaves. then the leaves could be used for another larger project. if you wanted it could be mixed media by make a tree of something else and adding the leaves. Or you can do a mosaic with each student making a square. Is there some reason the student project has to be an easy project? With wet felting they could do it over several classes. you need something fairly quick to have the teachers do but they should be able to scale it up.

Or make felted round beads and the they could use them in a key chain or jewelry.

Ok, I did think about the ziplock bag idea. The reason for keeping it simple is that this is a lecture class that I am teaching to art teachers. Apparently...they wanted to be exposed to art quilts. They contacted the quilt guild and the guild asked me to do this. So, the mixed media I show has to be related to art quilts. That is why I said the felting in relation to art quilts would have to be simplified, as it will be something that is attached to a quilt sandwich. Hand stitching will have to do the job, as they do not have sewing machines. I will not be doing any demonstrating, just presenting ideas and products that they are probably not familiar with. It will be up to the teachers to adapt everything to their own classroom experience. Thank goodness I don't have to teach this in a classroom with kids. I do enough of that already. lol I hope they don't ask me.

Oh - I guess I didn't understand what you meant. The felt bead idea would still work because they can be stitched on easily by hand. A simple felt flower would also work. That could be done in a ziplock bag if it's a small one. Sounds like they want it all in a very short time.

I like the flower idea or making a flat piece that could be cut to any shape and stitched on I agree their not giving you much time to explain things Judy are they

It's amazing they expect you to teach the teachers a skill without actually demonstrating it and letting them experience it. The experience will sell it and let them free to create. I'd have them get their hands wet. :-) Good luck!

These teachers are obviously in the camp which thinks there is no skill in craft! Ah well, according to G B Shaw, "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach!" I hasten to add - this is not aimed at you Judy!

There is one more part to that Judith. Those who can't teach administrate. That is probably be how scheduled it. ) Tube beds around some pencils is fun and they could stitch on them. they wrap the roving around 6 pencils and wet it and roll it back and forth in your hands. As the wool gets tight around the pencils you pull one out. when its tight around the last pencil its done. Rinse and let dry. Takes a few seconds to teach. It is noisy to do. The pencils all clack as you rub them back and forth.
