I have been trying some nuno felting (I was hoping to post something for the challenge last quarter, but things went a little different), but I'm not sure whether I have done it right. I have made several samples with cheesecloth and merino. I did a sample with the merino on one side of the cloth in a flowery shape, one with one side of the cloth fully covered with 2 layers of wool and one sample with one layer of merino on each side of the cloth. Those are way too many foto's for this post, so here's a link to Picasa: click If you use the rightside Arrow, you can scroll to the other pictures (hope this works). It seems to me that the wool is still very much "on top" of the cloth, not migrated through or blended together. But...I have no comparison so maybe I'm wrong. The wool seems to stick to the cloth.

You are on the right track. Did it shrink much? It looks to me like it isn't completely felted. That's OK, if you want it to be soft that works. But usually cheesecloth shrinks way down almost 50% or more in size. You can just get it wet again and keep fulling if you'd like to see if it will felt more and shrink down. Just get it wet and soapy and start throwing it hard against a firm surface, rub it against bubblewrap or other rough surface and be a bit more aggressive with it.

Thanks Ruth. I have rolled these samples quite gently, I didn't dare to be any rough with it. The fabric has shrunk just a little bit, but not nearly as much as I had expected. I'm going back to work on these

It sounds like the wool is holding so go for it!!

I agree with Ruth it looks felted but only a little fulled. Have some fun throwing it and scrunching it.

I have been trying some nuno felting (I was hoping to post something for the challenge last quarter, but things went a little different), but I'm not sure whether I have done it right. Simple answer is, if it turns out the way you wanted it to, it's right And I'd agree with what Ruth said. It all depends on what you want it for, they look felted enough for a soft drapey scarf, if you wanted something more sturdy for a book cover, full a bit more. If you want something even sturdier for a coin purse r camera case full even more than that. The more you full, the more it shrinks and the thicker it will get because the same amount of fabric/fibres are taking up less space, if that makes sense? I love the texture in photos 21 and 25 Take measurements before you do more work on them, and measure again after.
