Hi everyone I spent today lurking in the shadows until Admin gave me the OK I'm totally new to felting, but hope to learn a lot from you! I've already gleaned a few things from the rest of the forum; I'm particularly interested in felting with synthetic/plant fibres or wool that has been ethically sourced. I'm a vegetarian and the thought of using wool from sheep that go on to slaughter just doesn't sit easy I'm looking for sources so I'd be glad to hear of any advice on that, although I realise that I might be better posting a thread in the right bit of the forum Cheers ;D

Welcome paintergirl! Glad you joined us. Most wool is sourced from sheep that are NOT slaughtered. Meat breed sheep have wool that doesn't felt very well. I look forward to chatting with you and seeing what you felt - we love photos!

Hello Paintergirl Welcome to the forum. World of Wool sources its merino from sheep that haven't had their tails docked, Mulesing I think it's called. And Sara's texture crafts source local wool, I can definitely recommend Gotland, Wensleydale and Teeswater locks, they are unwashed and smell and look gorgeous, and felt nicely too World of Wool also have pretty much every kind of plant and synthetic fibre you can use in felting at ridiculously low prices.

Hi and welcome. As has already been said, good felting wool doesn't have to come from meat sheep and there are so many veggie-friendly fibres to incorporate. Have fun!

Hi Zed, we're not so far apart - I've been watching your Flickr how tos I've been looking at Julie Coghlan's work at Caldbeck so I found the World of Wool. The Woolfest will have another visitor next year I think! Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I'm excited about extending my skills, although I will be focusing on landscape work, complimenting what I do in paint. I think needling is the way forward for me, especially with me wanting to work with other fibres.

Pictoral felting is great. and mixed media is alot of fun. You will find a place for both here. We like to help and learn here.

I'd love to go to Woolfest one day, or any fibre festival really Liz who comments on our blog does landscape painting with felt, I think she wet felts her own background first before needling and wetting lightly. She uses lots of 'other' fibres too artbyliz.me/
