Great job for your first vase. I agree with Ann B. that an insert is your best bet for making felt "water proof". I find that the stiffness is lacking because the felt hasn't been fulled hard enough. It has taken me a long time to learn that usually felt can be fulled more than you ever thought possible. Keep working it however you do your fulling and come back the next day and full some more. Or use the washing machine if that is your preferred method although you lose a lot of control of the process, if you want a particular area to shrink more than another.

You could always use it for dried and/or artificial flowers - maybe felted flowers and leaves? You might need a pebble or something in the bottom to stop it tipping over though.
