Hello from New Zealand. I have felted a few hats and think they are good enough to sell, but I am wondering if it is better to line them first, or add an inside band? If so, what type of fabric do you use? My hats are all made with an internal layer of soft merino fibre. I have looked at sites where wet felted hats are for sale but none show the inside of the hats or mention bands or lining. Thanks Jo

Welcome Jo! I'm not going to be much help with your question as I don't sell hats. I have seen them sold either without anything or with an inside band. The inside band seems to make them look more professional. Hopefully, you will get some others who sell hats to answer your question. I would love to see some photos of your hats.

I never have. When I started the inner hatbands were very hard to find. It may be easier now. It is one more step to sew it in invisibly.

Thank you Ann, I didn't know you could buy bands ready-made, I was wondering if I needed to make my own.

Hi Jo, I do sell hats and depending on the structure of the hat and the wool I am using I do line some and some times use a grosgrain ribbon. Merino being soft I don’t line those but will add a grosgrain as a sweat barrier and to add a little structure. I usually do it with my top hats. Hope this information is helpful. The milliner I took lessons from in California showed me how to take wide grosgrain ribbon, fold the top edge down to create a casing, run a piece of ribbon through the casing and stitch to the inside of the hat. This actually acts as a sizing band allowing you to have adjustable sized hats. This makes them a bit more marketable as of course, most people like one particular hat in one style or color and if it doesn't fit you've lost the customer. Hope this is helpful. Judith, Montana
