Only because there isn't really any other venue, but the new policies and fees are terible.

Only because there isn't really any other venue, but the new policies and fees are terible. So really only Etsy? We find Etsy pretty good. We have regular sales on there and although fees are a bit high, there's no worry about the complicated European tax system as Etsy takes care of all that. Etsy has recently re-vamped the way they present sales, fees and tax figures to the seller and it's now much easier than before. If you have a website you can direct traffic to your Etsy shop. You could also put a photo onto Pinterest from your Etsy shop - should anyone click on the photo it will take them to your shop. We used to sell directly from our website but stopped because of the complications with European tax. There were costs involved even when selling for ourselves (Paypal, E-Junkie etc), so although we pay a little more to Etsy it's worth it for us.

Here they have made it unfair for customers and sellers. this is what one vendor posted on their Etsy page. They are asking people to contact them with the order and they will make up a custom listing including the correct tax just for them.
ATTENTION: AS OF JULY 1, 2022 Etsy no longer collects correct sales tax**** from Canadian customers for vendors that are registered to collect HST. Despite an uproar from vendors, they have not relented and persisted in eliminating the tool that previously did this task.
Instead, they asked vendors to increase prices to include tax — they don’t care that HST/GST/PST is set provincially and is not the same for the whole country — it varies from 5% - 15%.
I do not feel it would be right to increase my prices to include a random amount of tax into my prices, as it will unfairly change some clients amounts that they should not have to pay.

Oh dear. When I owned my brick and mortar business they did this to me in increasing the taxes I needed to collect. I hated it as it took a reasonably priced item to, not so plus, me as a small business owner. The % increase was little to large businesses (Walmart) and the like could hide it in their price increases on products where a bigger priced item would not even be felt.

1. You don't have to use Paypal if you are using your own site to sell. Stripe charges less! 2. There are lots of selling sites other than Etsy and Folksy. It may well be worth looking at Handmade at Amazon, Artfire, nuMonday. What about starting with eBay? Lots of potential buyers look on ebay before everywhere else! I do! 3. Wherever you list, be sure you understand the WAY to list. eg on Etsy you will find the names of products are quite bizarre because it's set up in such a way to find all the words you include - so your 'inspirational craft kit' may have to become 'felt, feltmaker, wool, craft kit, tutorial, inspirational, home learning'! 4. Be sure also to add tags, but ideally no more than 10 (I've been told) and only those that are relevant or Google searches can penalise you by ignoring your listing. What I am saying is that even if you list with a selling site rather than your own, it isn't quite plain sailing! 5. I don't know where you are based but do you have a Nextdoor site in your area? Depending on the moderators in your area you may be able to list as a business, or may have to list as personal, but it would be a good way to judge if there is any interest in what you are offering. 6. Don't write off Facebook. You don't have to post any personal stuff but once you have a personal page you an set up a 'working page' for publicising what you are doing and also you can use Facebook Marketplace. I have sold a lot through Marketplace and you an name your areas so if you choose ones near you, you can even 'save' people postage by letting them collect. Can't comment on instagram as I've not got to grips with it, but I believe it appeals to a younger audience in the main than FB. Hope this helps - do contact me direct if you want a more indepth discussion

I've been selling on Etsy since 2008. I don't do a lot of business there, but I've never had my shop closed down. The sellers must have violated something or perhaps not paid there balances. I was accepted to Amazon Handmade years ago, but my shop is dormant. They really want sellers to use their "fulfilled by Amazon" feature, but I don't make products that can be "mass produced" so I don't use AHM at all. I use Square for payments at shows. I have a Paypal account and it's very useful for lots of things and very secure. What bothers you about PP? It's a way of authenticating sellers for various platforms. I looked at Artfire ages ago, and it seemed as if it was full of low priced things. I post to my personal FB page and share on my biz one. I don't use FB for selling because I don't want the IRS tracking me. You can sell on FB if you have enough of a friend base, just by posting your wares, taking payments off FB and then either arranging for PU or adding shipping charges.
