Hello All, my name is Caryn. I'm 69 and live in Reno NV. I'm a retired Emergency RN, a painter, and own a small business creating organic body and home products. My love of nature has been expressed the last 10 years in my garden, growing organic botanicals like oregano, thyme, lemon balm, echinacea, feverfew, yarrow and many more.
Years ago I was introduced to fiber art while I was living in Mt. Shasta CA. I was hooked immediately then! I ended up having 5 weaving looms of various forms, a spinning wheel, and went so far as to sheer a sheep, dye it with the colors from my garden plants, and spinning it, then weaving it into tapestry or fabric. It was wonderful!
Fast forward to 20 years later and here I am, with my beloved plants, serving in a different way by distilling my plants and creating healing hydrosols, organic facial products, soaps, house cleaners and diffuser oils and much more! I recently have formulated and am making over 800 bottles of natural hand sanitizer our of Everclear, aloe vera, peroxide, vitamin E, vegetable glycerin, and three organic essential oils that are known for their anti-viral properties.
OK enough of the intro. Last Christmas my family got together for our annual ornament creations, and I learned about felting little tree decorations. And... I was once again hooked!
I came home from our family Christmas holiday and within a couple of weeks I had everything for wet felting, dry felting, nuno felting; I even made made a hat! Wall hangings (felt paintings) are a passion, vessels, felting characters (I'm making a baby mobile now with 4 figurines of our family Golden Retrievers, colorful balls and toys and a music box. I'm in love!
I'm so glad I came upon this forum and look forward to learning and making friends!
So my first question now: I have nuno felted a couple of scarves so far and like the results. However the first scarf/shawl I made was a double felt, a sandwich of wool encasing a silk fabric. I loved it at first: pure white with chunky yarns felted in, some angelina sparkles, etc. But, it didn't felt completely, as pretty as it was... so I pulled it out and re-felted it and it worked! The problem is that it shrank so much and got quite thick! It started at about 36" "49 inches, and shrank to 28 x 38! It's rather square for a shawl and too thick to drape well. So I'm reaching out to my new forum friends to ask what any of you may have created by pretty fabric that didn't work out for the original plan?
I'll tried to attach a photo of it but can't figure out how to do it: When I click on image it asks for a URL. So if you have an idea how to attach a pic, I'd appreciate it. In the meantime it's sold white merino wool, wet felted on both side, encasing silk chiffon (100% silk, no synthetics). It has chunky yarn, some white silk hankie pieces from my first attempt to work with cacoons, and some angelina sparkles.
Any suggestions of what can I do with this?
I'm sorry I've been long winded in this post, but wanted to introduce myself before I approached you all with my first felting challenge.
I'd love some feedback please?
Stay well during these challenging times!
