https://www.instagram.com/p/B70hM5Blc_U https://www.instagram.com/p/B70hV3FlqVu Been working on these horse chestnuts / conkers. I made the solo conker first then made the case using the same resist but because it is much thicker it’s much bigger so the nut rattled around in there. Made some thumb-in-the-air calculations and made a second nut which fits very snugly. The spikes are a bit too exaggerated because I got bored making them so they got bigger & bigger as I went along! The case is perendale wool, the conkers are a mostly merino but the bigger one has some perendale layers underneath. Should have included something in the photos for scale: circumference of case is approx 50cm / 20 inches.

"Thumb in the air calculations". Heh. You've given me a new motto to live by What a cool looking pod. And seed, of course!

Lol. To be honest I was rather appalled at my inability to work out precisely what size the resist needed to be as I could work out the shrinkage on the first one. I kept working it out and getting different numbers then just went with a number that seemed about right!

Fabulous conkers and case Lindsay! Love the detail of the white where the case is cut through.

Fabulous conkers and case Lindsay! Love the detail of the white where the case is cut through. Thanks, Lyn. I fulled it hard and cut the edge again at the end so that the cut was crisp & not ‘healed’ by the shaping.

Sometimes it's the smallest detail that makes such a difference isn't it?

Love it Lindsay and here I thought I was the only one that got bored making the detail bits Good idea on cutting again at the end. Note to self, remember that tip!

They are very cool. I wouldnt have thought to make them that big. I would be cursing as I tried to make them real sized. Those repetative fiddley bits can be hard to keep at. A good audio book and a comfy chair help a lot.

It’s the repetitive things that I find dull. Once I’ve made & attached 3 or 4 spikes I think ‘yeah, got that, what’s next?!’ Silly really. I didn’t consciously start to make them bigger to cover more ground but it soon became obvious!

A good audio book and a comfy chair help a lot. I agree. I listen to audiobooks all the time. We can access them free through the public library system so I often opt for gentle stories of the cozy mystery type. Not because they’re great literature but because they’re easy to listen to while being interesting and not too emotional. I don’t want tears dropping into the wool!
