Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement, here is the finished scarf for my partner's Manchester United supporting friend:
Still some bleeding but less than before and it will serve the purpose of keeping his neck warm, tucked into his jacket when he is riding his bike.

Love it Pamster! I like the way you've composed it with the red stripes larger than the black and white and I think that the small amount of bleeding is pretty! Far better than having exact lines between two colours.

Wow, Pamster, that looks really good! Can’t believe you got the stripes so accurate and I agree with Lyn, I actually like a little bit of colour bleed - it differentiates wet felt from other textiles.
