Maybe it would be best to stop calling yourself a mixed media artist and just call yourself an artist. Maybe a group in a different area would be better or a bigger or different city. I don't really know where you are. I know my closest city is conservative and at least 5 years behind other places when it comes to art , fashion and just about anything else.

Ok, after my big long rant, I have some surprising news. I was asked to participate at the Springfield/Branson National Airport, which is on the edge of town. We are a big tourist destination for Branson entertainment. So, I was pretty happy. Found out that I would be exhibiting with 4 other professional fiber artists, who exhibit locally and nationally and internationally. That made me kind of nervous, but I know that I am not that far behind them. They all do very abstract work, and I do a lot of realism, so I figured I was an alternative. When I dropped off my work, the woman who puts together exhibits all over town asked me where I have been hiding? She said she has been looking for fiber artists and wants me to have my own exhibit, covering 2 walls at an office complex. I was floored.

Wow that's great Judy. Yes, we want pictures. Now you will find out where all the other non painter artists have been hiding.

This is hard for me to admit, but I think that I have not been thinking of myself as a professional. It was easier to think that way when I was a busy painter going from show to show in a big city. In retirement, 6 years ago, I decided to go into Fiber Art, so that I would learn new things and stay more alert in my old age. So, I had to start out as a new quilter. I am also in a more laid back retirement town. I am entering the wrong shows. I am exhibiting with non professionals and I am the only fiber artist in these groups. So I have now taken the plunge and joined the Artists Registry for professional artists in town. I need to find more professional shows to jury into. If I fail to get in, I will just keep trying. When I looked at the professional artists work at the airport, I realized that I was almost as good as they are. In 6 years I went from beginner to professional. I am not writing this to brag, but to help all of us to look at our work with fresh eyes. Hard work and persistence does pay off. It doesn't matter what I call myself, it is about being professional and entering the right shows.

Congratulations Judy! It is a hard jump and I'm glad that you realized that you need to move up from shows like the fair. I can't wait to see the photos!!

Well done Judy, "Believe" as they say you have done your apprenticeship years ago, I also agree with the comments here about mixed media and would not define that ladies interpretation as correct either.

Brilliant news!! I bet you are over the moon ;D
(And I would interpret 'mixed media' as meaning paining was one medium)

I am working on a truly mixed media piece, involving a painted portrait, some black felt for hair, vintage jewelry, shisha mirrors, beading and drapery fabric. It is a photo interpretation. This has taken me a very long time to accomplish. I still have a long way to go and there is no one to consult. No one is doing this in my area. So....I think that I am earning the right to call myself a Mixed Media artist. I appreciate watercolor, but I don't think what I do can be compared to watercolor media painting. It is totally a different category. I think you would all agree.

If you would like to see this project in progress, you can go to my blog and see "Projects of Interest." I am documenting the process there. Scroll down past the Dogwood project. It will explain the project.

Judy - your portrait is gorgeous! You have done an excellent job and your painting is superb. You can definitely call yourself a mixed media artist. I hope you'll post some photos on here of your progress!
