Silk noil won't felt on its own, regardless of what you've been told. Some silk can form a kind of paper, or keep its shape on its own if it still has sericin in it. It looks to me like the pod and the roving are mostly wool with silk noil carded in. If you use lots of silk noil in felting, it looks like a thick piece of 'fabric', it doesn't look hairy or like wool. It has a distinctive feel, smell and even sound-like tearing. It doesn't come in 'tops', or roving. The seller should really know more or be clearer about what they're selling. Band of silk noil: Greens (detail) by zedster01, on Flickr

Your bowls/pods are beautiful, Robin! Lovely mixes of colors. How nice that people buy them!

Zed--thank you for this information. This was the first "silk noil" I had ever worked with, so I had nothing to compare it to and took at face value what the seller said. Looking more carefully at the fibre, I now think it is a wool/silk noil blend as you said--explaining why it felts. I will be on the look out for other silk noil for comparison.

Whatever blend it is, it makes lovely looking vessels!

The vessel is great. I agree that it must be a blend but it's still useful no matter what it is.

It turned out really well. A good felting combo.

You're welcome, Robin I think there's always something new to learn in felting, especially with fibres! I sort of had the opposite problem a few years ago, I'd bought Silk Noil from World of Wool, a strange almost sheet of fibre with weird oat like bits in, but overall soft and shiny, and felted nicely (in the pic I posted), so when I saw some branded dyed silk noil, I expected the same, but it was like hard clumps of dried soggy paper towels. I was so disappointed. It's alright once it's carded though! I agree with the others that the blend makes really nice vessels. The sheen of the silk hankies really stands out with it

I see that the very knowledgeable and experienced silk importer here in Auckland is now selling tussah silk noil sliver. I'm intrigued by that--I'll see if he'll send me a sample.

I love using silk noil. I dye it myself and don't bother if I get "hard clumps of dried soggy paper towels" as Zed commented. They can be easily teased out and they give such a nice and interesting texture. Here is such an example www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=916985895122706&set=pcb.916986365122659&type=3&theater where I used it on a felted collar. The light greenish stuff is silk noil (you can see it on the right), other embellishments are throwster waste, viscose, cocoons, etc.

I have gotten several grades of silk noil even though there wasn't a grade listed when I purchased. One set was gorgeous, white silk, very fluffy and dyed beautifully. Another set was more like Zed's description of hard lumps and very grey. It still took dye and did tease out as Nada comments.
