An email from Felt:Feutre Canada announced the arrival of Bergschaf wool at DHG (never heard of them) . Sort of sounded like this was exciting news. I checked their site (in Italy) and they had so many different fibres available.. including Himalayan stinging nettle. Any one used any of these products?

I have heard of the Bergshaf but haven’t used it. But know some of our members have. I’m sure they will let you know their experience. Have fun! It’s always exciting trying new wools.

Liza, I've been buying from DHG shop. Nettle fibers are similar to bamboo, not as fine as viscose or silk and I find them most useful on coarser wool, e.g. Bergschaf. Bergcshaf is about 29 mic and is suitable for bags or shoes. Natural colours felt really well while dyed ones shring less and are a bit more difficult to felt. If you are buying from Europe, perhaps you should try Wollknoll or Wollfabrik, both from Germany. Their bergschaf is the best in my experience.

Nada, could you compare the quality of Italian (DHG) and German (Wollknoll) wool in tops please? 17-19 mics? I've heard that Italians bleaching technology (before dyeing the wool) is more advance (and less damaging) so that it felts better. Have you noticed the difference? I have never ordered from DHG directly...

Felicity, I prefer DHG merino tops to the Wollknoll ones. They are finer (18 mic), and you can get even finer wool (16 mic), which I've tried too and recommend it for realy fine works, e.g. nuno scarves. They even have 14 mic wool which I am planning to test in the future. Not to mention the array of colours they offer. If you order goods at the amount of 200 EUR or more, the postage is free. This is why I try to invite my friends to make a large order together.

Yes, their choice of colours is overwhelming! I do not use tops often, just a few scarves a year, so an order of 200 EUR is out of question for me. But I add some interesting colours to my orders of the other wools...

The Himalayan stinging nettle is a rayon fiber and not a bast fiber? I have a friend that will be harvesting the nettles I have here on the farm. she will do it in the spring to see how they compare to the ones she harvested in the late fall. she will process them as bast fibers like flax and hemp.
