I want to put some grommets in some bags. Has anyone put grommets in ther felt before? I am thinking I should make a small hole to push one part through.

Are grommets the same thing as 'eyelets' like these Ann? If so, I did poke a little hole in the felt first. It was a bit of a job to get the devils in the felt!

Lyn, that looks like an oil burner, amazing.

Lyn, that looks like an oil burner, amazing. Thank you! I saw a ceramic oil burner in a charity shop and I thought it would make a good felt project! I put a battery powered tea-light in it for effect but it didn't photograph well (I think it's because the faux flame flickered) so I shone a small torch into the void to light it for the photo.

Yes Lyn they are the same. It's the farmer in me. Grommets are big ones on farm tarps. Do you think they are holding onto the wool well? I plan to put a carabiner in it.

Maybe a large grommet in fulled felt would hold - those above are purely decorative. I also used grommets to make a vase wrap (like a corset closure) but again they didn't take any strain.
I would suggest making a small piece of felt similar to that you make your bag from, insert a grommet and carabiner and tug it about a bit.

Thanks Lyn. Maybe I will put some stitching around the hole to re enforce it too.

Zed that sounds like me, buy it and forget to use it or lose it in the studio and end up doing something else.

Yeah, so many times. I need a box for rediscoveries and a plan to actually use them

I know this is an older post... but I have used lots of eyelets/grommets that take A LOT of strain. I've made a few pairs of boots now all with eyelet/lace ups. Not only do they hold well in the felt, but I actually put all my strength into a final stretching over the arches of the foot with the lace threaded through a set of holes...literally stand on the boot and pull with all my strength...never had one move or become loose. This is in thick very firm felt. To put them in I 1st push a hole with an awl, push eyelet in, then stamp eyelet closed...I now have a press to do this....something to think about...don't put the eyelet too close to the edge (centred 15mm from edge on my boots).

Wow! Are you able to share a photo? I admire that you've made more than one pair - that's a lot of work. The press sounds like a good idea - I didn't know they existed.

A lot of Russian felters use them in their bags and shoes. Some do it themselves, some go to cobblers to install them. I've tried it once (went to cobbler) but it was very expensive and of poor quality. Need to buy a press I think! Picture below is NOT of my bag, just an example!
