Here's a hat that I made for my recent hand stitch homework. It wasn't required but I wanted to try the flat stitches and shisha mirrors on felt. The hat was felted out of short fiber merino and the stitching was done with 3 perle cotton. It was a bit tough stitching though the thick felt and figuring out how to place the design. Next time I think I would use 5 perle cotton.

Wow that's great. The contrasts in the colours and the surface textures work really well. It's almost too nice to wear as a hat though!

Fantastic! I really like the colours together and it's a beautiful hat - I expect you will get a lot of admiring glances and comments when you wear it.

Thanks everyone! Ann - I don't know the exact amount of time but I worked on it over a two week period. I would say 10-12 hours.

It has a real oriental look, in my opinion. I can see it worn with a jacket from India or something similar. Beautiful.

Thanks Judy and Karen - it was based on a piece from India so I'm glad it has that feel - that's what I was going for. It's a bit big (and I have a really big head) but I think if I put a ribbon inside I can wear it. I will have to start wearing hats as I'm making more and more of them.

In one of my past lives, I made a lot of hats and even sold a lot of them. I still wear my hats, but find that I am almost totally alone in every crowd. Women do not wear hats in this country. Not sure why.

I see more hats here the last few years. Winter hats are more popular. You need to wear a hat in the winter here. You must wear a winter hat where you are Ruth, it gets cold like here.

I sometimes wear a winter hat. Usually just a scarf.

Same in England - most women don't wear hats except at weddings!
In the winter you might see some, but they are usually utilitarian rather than decorative.
