I can't believe it. I would never dare to do this. Waiting to see the changes you make.

The base layer is just prefelted coarse wool that I made myself (3-4 layers) manually with the incredible handy tool; "Feltimate" - 36 needles (you can get more) at once, love it! Making prefelt like this is easily done, and works like a charm. I wouldn't be without it!
A base layer like that will be little loose in the start, but will felt more and more as you work on the piece after he top layer(s) are added. This allows you to lightly fasten the top wool (mostly merino tops in this case), and just as easy to remove as you see fit.
Making the base layer like this is a huge part when it comes to how I blend colors, as I can have several different colors in the base layer, allowing more hues to occur in the final result. Nifty!

I've never seen that tool before. I've needle-felted and wet-felted my prefelts depending on usage but never had a prefelt I'd have been comfortable cutting like that. Usually, when I "paint" with wool I get it all tacked down in place (and always loose enough to move things) until the end. Then I felt the living daylights out of it.

Yes, once you wet-felt something it gets a very different feel to it, and I can see how cutting it could feel sacrilegious. And that's the interesting part of needle-felting; there's so many ways to do it! So many options - which is why I love this forum.
The "Feltimate" is also perfect to prepare items for wet-felting. A unique little thing, just like the palmboards to Heart Felt Silks. I've also seen it with a wooden top, quite beautiful. Though mine is just like the one in the video.

I've never seen that tool either, but it sounds like it's very handy and easy to use! I have a Simplicty needle felting machine and have made prefelt with that, but I don't like the texture, but then I am usually wet felting with it.

I have a Janome felting machine and I love to make pre-felt with it that I use for my 3D pieces. For flat felted paintings I love my Feltimate. I'm grateful for both! I have a few rather busy days ahead. I've only had the chance to work a tiny bit on it. I thought I could keep the left eye and change everything else, because I was rather pleased with it. Discovered that was not the case. After I changed the eye, the rest fell in place - along with the new porpotions More pictures will come over the weekend.

Feltimate looks like a very useful tool to work on larger pieces. I've never seen it before. Thank you for showing us the progress on your portrait. Do you also paint? You do have artistic feeling, this os for sure.

Hi everyone! Long time no see. Life's been busy! Since this thread is called "stargazer - work s in progress" I'll share the progress of another project I'm currently working on. That way I don't occupy more threads then needed, he he. For those of you who's wondering how the fauvist face is doing - it's not done. Primarily because I need more colors to do better blending and I'm still unsure of what to order, but I'll finish it for sure! The picture below shows the bowl you've seen earlier. I was back and forth a lot on whether to keep it colorless and just do a very simple figurative add to it, and to full out and make an actual art piece. I decided on the last. What is it that I'm felting? Follow the thread and see as I go along https://www.instagram.com/p/BVAFqk7h4ZE

That looks like a lot of needle felting so far! Looking forward to seeing the finished thing.
